plang: Bologan played 6 0-0!? to surprise his opponent and had he played 7 a4 he would have been fine but after his 7 Ne5?! he had clearly missed the reply 7..Ng4! after which he was already worse. 8 f4 had been played once before in an obscure 1994 game; 8 Nxc4 was new and gave White at least some compensation for the pawn. Bologan thought that Black should have tried to exchange a pair of knights with 9..Ne5. Black missed the opportunity to return the pawn under favorable circumstances with 13..b6! 14 Nxc6..Bf5 15 Qc3..Nxc6 16 Qxc6..Qxc6 17 Bxc6..Rad8; instead Volokitin's 13..g5?! created kingside weaknesses. 16..b5?! was another weakening pawn move. Black may have underestimated 26 Rxc3!; the alternative 26 Rd3..Nxe2+ 27 Kf1..Nxg3+ 28 fxg..Ne5+ 29 Ke2..Nxd3 30 Rxd3..b4 would have favored Black. 32..h6 looks like it would have been a tougher defense.
