Dec-18-05 | | ARMENIA: Yes, many might consider Arahonyan "lucky" but I really regret that people think this way. Levon is a great example of break-through in chess; a person who isn't affraid to play his game and isn't intimidated by rating or any outside garbage. He likes to answer the questions at the chess board and he doesn't act tragic when he is unable to perform to the level he is inspired to. He is a hard working young man who has a goal of carving his name in the history books of this magnificant name and isn't planning to let anyone or anything to stop him! Great son of Armenia! Proud and loyal member of our great motherland! I wish him and others of his caliber the most luck and a green way! Let God be with you and guide to you more memorable victories! |

Dec-18-05 | | esticles: 30. Bxh7! was totally beyond me when I first looked through the game. It seems that if white immediately takes the rook, 30...Qf3+ 31. Rd4 Rd8! Now white must let black trade off the isolated pawn, giving white one of his own (white can't recapture after pawn takes rook because a black rook on d4 would have nasty discoveries) and black is a little better due to his advanced a-pawn. I guess 29...Rd2 was a losing move despite its cleverness. |

Dec-18-05 | | Confuse: yay for aronian : ) |

Dec-18-05 | | Skylark: Levon is an awesome song too. <3 Elton John |

Dec-18-05 | | ReikiMaster: <esticles> You mean 30.Qxd2? Qf6+ 31.Kb1? Qb2# |

Dec-18-05 | | Petrosian63: This is a great win by Aronian.
Good luck at Corus 2006!!! |

Dec-18-05 | | ponchonegro: Congratulations! I agree with <Armenian> the qualities I appraise: "not affraid, not intimidated by rating, a hard working man! He deserves support. |

Dec-18-05 | | dakgootje: nice game, but i guess 29. ...♖d2 was a blunder... |

Dec-18-05 | | patzer2: I prefer "I'm levon on a jet pons," in reference to http://www.nizam.com/firecoma/songs.... |

Dec-18-05 | | patzer2: The more I see of these 2700 plus rated player games, the more I'm convinced mastry of defensive technique is one of the big differences between their play and that of their lower rated opponents. In this game, Aronian plays the strong defensive, clearance move 30. Bh7+! to refute Pons dubious sacrifice offer 29...Rd2?! Perhaps Pons was hoping for 29...Rd2?! 30. Qxd2? Qf6+ 31. Rd4 cxd4 32. exd4 Rd8 33. Rd1 Bg4 34. Re1 g6 35. Re3 Rxd4 with the initiative and the attack belonging to Black. Instead, the game continuation clears the c2 square for White so he can respond to 31...Qf6+? with 32. Qc6 with a near decisive advantage. p.S. Instead of 29...Rd2?!, Pons could have played 29...c4 or 29...Ra8 with decent prospects. |

Dec-18-05 | | Ezzy: I was wondering why Vellejo-Pons committed suicide by giving up 2 pawns for nothing. 35..Bf5 36.Qxc4 Rd2 37.Qxf7. It seems he was aiming for a speculative tactic - 37..Qe4 Threatening wonderful things like - 38..Rc2 39.Rd1 Qe5+ 40.Rd4 Rc1+ 41.Kb2 Rb1+ 42.Kc3 Qc5+ 43 Qc4 <43.Rc4 <43.Kd2 Qc2 Mate> Qxa3+ 44.Kd4 Qd6+ 45.Qd5 Rd1+ 46.Kc3 Qa3Mate> Qxa3+ winning. But Aronian is not going to allow any of that nonsense. The lines are quite nice though, and show what is available if the opponent slips up. |

Dec-18-05 | | DeepBlade: I think 29. ...Rd2 is the blunder, but I dont understand why black did play the move so it may not be an blunder at all. |
|
Dec-18-05 | | Ezzy: <DeepBlade:> 29..Rd2? was not a good move, but not what you you call a blunder. What lost him the game was the series of moves when Vellejo-Pons played 35..Bf5 36.Qxc4 Rd2 37.Qxf7 giving up 2 pawns for nothing. As I mention above, he was trying for a winning tactic that was easily refuted by Aronian. 35..Bf5? 36..Rd2? lost him the game. |

Dec-18-05 | | EmperorAtahualpa: <patzer2> Congratulations on your caissar award! I think it was well deserved. |
|
Dec-18-05 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Can somebody explain 29...Rd2? And why not 30.Qxd2? Why give away the bishop with 30.Bh7?
I also don't get the pun for today's GOTD. What is it about? Something with Elton John? A very entertaining game otherwise!

Dec-18-05 | | kevin86: A very wild game indeed! At times it looks like neither player could save the game. At one point, black left a rook in the lurch under penalty of mate in two. Nice to see that even the losers of these games could put up a good threat or two. |
|
Dec-18-05 | | Tariqov: <EmperorAtahualpa>If 30.Qxd2?then comes Qf6+31Rd4(forced)Rd8 winnig a pawn.
The reason for 30Bh7+! is that after Kxh7 then 31.Qxd2 ifQf6+ 32.Qc3 blocking because the rook is protecting the c3 square |

Dec-19-05 | | EmperorAtahualpa: Thank you <Tariqov>! |
