White's dominance around the Black King's defense is most likely a deciding factor in this position. For a long while (more than a usual Tuesday) I was stuck on N/Qxh6 but moreso on f6. For some reason I couldn't make an early sac work, and wanted to settle with increasing the pressure. I am pretty sure f6 eventually wins, but the text move is much stronger. <42.Nxh6> of course does work, but not with the idea I initially had in mind. I was keen on capturing on h6 again but this obviously doesn't work. White needs to remove the defender of h6 first and does so with the deciding move <43.g7>. If Black moves his Queen to any other square on the back rank but e8 White mates with 44.Qf7+ Kh7 45.g8# (any piece is mate). After <43....Qe8 44.Qxh6  > the only way Black can defend immediate mate is with 44....Qg6+ 45.Qxg6 but still mate soon. Take note that even 44....Qh5 45.Qh8+ Qxh8 46.gxh8=R/Q# is mate. |
