Dec-17-08  YoungEd: Alapin wins with Alapin's Opening! Hooray! I like the king march at the end.
Jul-07-09  WhiteRook48: doesn't 40 Bc7 win the game?
Jul-07-09  levelzx: I guess 40...Kh7, giving back the exchange, is good enough to fight back. If 41. Rxf7+ then 41...Kg6 and Black drops important pawn on f6. Generally it is not in White's plan to relieve the cramp on enemy position: he will do it only after securing maximum activity for own pieces. And this time it's King who needs to join the fight. Note also that in some variations it's important that 'd' pawn is pinned to his own King. So 40. Kc2 is indeed the best choice.
Jan-14-12  williec: There is no game viewer so I cannot view the games
Jan-01-16  thegoodanarchist: OK, not a great pun but I laughed heartily at it. That's gotta count for something!
Jan-01-16  thegoodanarchist: this is "ye olde timey chess" for sure.
Jan-01-16  Sularus: Alapin violates a few opening "principles" and gets away with it!
Jan-01-16  morfishine: Lange was hardly "old" at 58 years. But thats pretty much par for the course around here: Nonsense submitted, Nonsense voted for

mistermac: Good pun for this time of year.
Jan-01-16  RandomVisitor: <williec>From chessgames help section: "HOT TIP - Our help desk has observed that downloading www.java.com solves 90% of all problems of this nature. Even if you've already installed Java, try it again--it's a very easy and safe download."

Also, try turning off any script blocking addon - just add an exception for chessgames.com.

Jan-01-16  RandomVisitor: 15...Bc7 might avoid a lot of problems later...
Jan-01-16  JohnBoy: Sorry <morf>. Lange was at the tail end of a fine career, while Alapin was just entering his heyday. At the very least Lange, w/ 24 more years under his belt, was substantially older.
Jan-01-16  greed and death: Actually <morf>, in 1890, Lange had exceeded the average life expectancy of Europeans for the time by about 15 years; so he was quite old when this game was played.

Jan-01-16  zanzibar: <G&D> - the trouble with stats like those is that infant mortality skews the averages greatly.

I think it would be better if two other figures were quoted - the percentage of children who don't survive childhood, and the average life expectancy of those who do.

Jan-01-16  thegoodanarchist: <zanzibar: <G&D> - the trouble with stats like those is that infant mortality skews the averages greatly. >

True. But even today, with low infant mortality in the developed world, 58 is considered old!

Jan-02-16  Immortal Gambit: what does the pun mean?
Jan-02-16  epistle: It means you should not forget your old acquaintances.
Jan-02-16  zanzibar: <IG> it's a word play on <Auld Lang Syne>, the famous New Year's Eve song.

Sally Simpson: The famous New Year's Eve song.

So it's:

'Should old acquaintance be forgot...

..in the days of old Lang - Alapin."

Jan-02-16  kevin86: A fine game to start the year...Alapin's opening wins!!
Jan-02-16  kevin86: and king decides it!
