May-27-13 | | Infohunter: <Phony Benoni> I must concur; I really can't see the point of that to-and-fro movement of the White King instead of pushing the Pawn at move 57. |
|
May-27-13 | | Infohunter: <darksquare67> Yes there is! Good catch! |

 | | Phony Benoni: And, just to ruin the pun while we're at it, we have a misidentification: White is actually Francis Jackson. See round three here: http://www.olimpbase.org/2006/2006i... |
|
May-27-13 | | newzild: In addition to the missed wins pointed out to others, I was surprised while clicking through the game to see 42. Rc1+? when 42. Rc7+ wins at least a knight. |
|
May-27-13 | | newzild: ...there also doesn't seem to be anything "in Flanders' Field", which makes the attempted pun a bit lame. |

May-27-13 | | PeaceRequiresAnarchy: This game is like war. It's bad. A lot of bad stuff happens in it. It lasts far too long. "The pioneers of a warless world are the youth who refuse military service." - Butchered Einstein Happy Memorial Day.... |

May-27-13 | | Abdel Irada: Phenomenal. White had such a powerful position for so long, and did so little with it. ∞ |

May-27-13 | | hedgeh0g: Awful game. Looks like something off Instantchess. |

 | | FSR: What a horrid game. How many "??" moves did White have to find to lose it? |
|
May-27-13 | | SuperPatzer77: It sure looks like two patzers' chessgame in the 2006 Chess Olympiad. What a lousy game!! White to move and win - see diagram
White should have won with his 45th move forcing a mate in two. Field Jackson missed this move below: click for larger view45. Rc7+, Ka6, 46. Ra8#

May-27-13 | | iamsheaf: a game between a 1700 and 2000 rated player. Looks more like an internet blitz.. exceptionally poor game from both even if you take into account their ratings |

 | | FSR: Looks more like a game between a 753 and a 1046 than a 1753 and a 2046. |

 | | Benzol: As <dumbgai> pointed out the pun is part of a poem written in the First World War. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Fla... for a bit more info. |

 | | FSR: The poem's author, John McCrae, died of pneumonia while serving in World War I, less than three years after writing "In Flanders Fields." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_M... If he knew anything of chess, he'd turn over in his grave at the sight of this game. |

May-27-13 | | mandy64: Also 46. Re1 would have been a winning move. |

 | | Phony Benoni: This was a big rivalry match between the Netherland Antilles and the US Virgin Islands. There was undoubtedly a lot of tension involved, and the play may have suffered as a result. But that point has been made sufficiently. Just have to chalk this up as one of those unfortunate GOTDs that are selected simply for the possible pun--and even that falls apart since White's name is not actually "Field". |
|
May-27-13 | | chesswar1000: This probably would have been better suited for May 3. |

May-27-13 | | Abdel Irada: <chesswar1000: This probably would have been better suited for May 3.> I was thinking April 1.

May-27-13 | | inmate5: Hi <newzild>, you write <I was surprised ... to see 42. Rc1+? when 42. Rc7+ wins at least a knight.>
I think, however, that the game line is better:
On the one hand, white could have given mate after the game continuation, as mentioned by <darksquare67> (<Isn't there a mate in 2 at move 45?>). Other options after 42. Rc1+ don't seem much better for black. On the other hand, 42. Rc7+ Kb8 43. Rxd7 Rxb2 seems likely to end in a draw - at least with worst play from both sides (i.e., in my analysis ;) |
|
May-27-13 | | Tigranny: One of the worst games I've seen in a while... White should've been able to win. |
|
May-27-13 | | SuperPatzer77: <FSR: Is today your birthday, perchance? Apparently CG.com decided to honor you by having a game between two superpatzers as its GOTD. :-) > <FSR> No, it ain't my birthday. Mine is August 17 - (Davy Crockett's birthday as well) As a SuperPatzer I could find a winning move like 45. Rc7+ - just simple as that. Yeah, I'm SuperPatzer77 who could find this move - Rc7+ These two players could be "GrandPatzers" - worse than SuperPatzers, I presume. LOL SuperPatzer77 |

May-28-13 | | kevin86: the bishop and knight can mate by themselves-they didn't need the queen. |
