Jul-07-07 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <RandomVisitor> I am curious what is Rybka's opinion regarding the best move for the black after 26.Nb5. Hiarcs insists that the move played in the game, 26 ... Qd2 was a major blunder well over 2 points worse than 26 ... Qxb2. |
Jul-07-07 | | vortex2639: well I didn't get their line but I was closer than I've ever gotten on a Sat. I had 26.Nb5 Qxb2 27.Nd6 Rf8 28.Nxf7! Rxf7 29.Qxg6+ Kf8 30.Ne6+ Ke8 32.Ng5+ Kd8 33.Qxf7 and I couldn't find much chance for black. I am not a strong enough player to assume I found black's best response, can someone find a better one here? |
Jul-07-07 | | vortex2639: <MostlyAverageJoe:> Cool, I found 26...Qxb2 as preferred by Hiarcs, can't believe I made a move the computer likes. what does the comp say about 27? if you don't mind. |

Jul-07-07 | | not yet a patzer: Hello Everybody,
I saw that Nxg6 in combination with the Q would put black in serious trouble, but f7 is in the way. Thus, why not 26.Re6 with the hope of 26...fxe6? If 26...Rxe6 then 27.dxe6. There are many possibilites since blacks moves are not forced, but the goal is simply to get f7 to move. The text move allows the black queen to pin the N, so I would rather just leave her alone, especially since f6 is not essential to my little plan. |

Jul-07-07 | | VargPOD: Was way off here. Thought 26.Nxg6 etc. variation was good, didn't see excellent Ng4+ -counterstrike. Much more difficult then Friday's. |

Jul-07-07 | | Fezzik: Wow, I soooooo missed this one. This was a great puzzle! Thanks cg.com! |

Jul-07-07 | | Marmot PFL: Only took a couple minutes here and decided on Nxg6, thinking it was too easy. Missed Ng4+ as an effective defence as I thought white would still win with Q+N attacking the K but it seems he can't. This was hard as there were several variations and Nb5 is not an obvious move. |
Jul-07-07 | | rogermorin: I don't find a defence to 26.ne6 fe 27.qxg6+ kf8 28.ne4 nxe4 29.rxe4 with a mating pattern |
Jul-07-07 | | get Reti: I thought Re6 was the first move in this one. I saw Nb5, but was too lazy to calculate where the queen would go and wanted to go direct to the breaking up of the kingside pawns. |
Jul-07-07 | | awfulhangover: First I missed this week. Thought it was Ne6. The best, Nb5, was never in my tiny brain. |

Jul-07-07 | | Crowaholic: Tough... 26. Nxg6 fxg6 (forced because of the dual threat of Qh8# and Rxe8 leading to mate) 27. Qxg6+ Kf8 (..Kh8 28. Rxe8+ Nxe8 29. Qxe8+ and White has won two pawns) 28. Re6 Rxe6 29. dxe6 Qe5+ 30. g3 Qxe6 now what? 28. Rf1 may be more promising. 28. ..Ke7 Qg7+ followed by capturing the knight and White does win 2 pawns. Wait... 26. ..fxg6 is not forced. The clearance sac 26. ..Ng4+ 27. hxg4 allows 27. ..Rxe1 and now White has no mate threats and material is even after the next few moves. :-( White has 28. Qf8+ Kh7 29. Qxf7+ but there are no mate threats and material is N+2P for an R. I don't see anything for White now, e.g. 30. Nf4?? and Black has 30. ..Qg1+ 31. Kg3 (or Kh3) Re3+ 32. Kh4 Qh2+ 33. Nh3 Qg3#. It's Black who has the mate threats by now - too bad... Maybe play 26. Rxe8+ Nxe8 first? But now 27. Nxg6 loses much of its sting - this seems pointless. What about 26. Ne6 ? The continuation 26. ..fxe6 27. Qxg6+ Kh8 28. dxe6 Qd6+ 29. Kh1 Rxe6 is bad for White. After 28. Rxe6 Rxe6 29. dxe6, Black has the check on e5 again and White has nothing to show for. 26. Nh5 ? I don't even see what this could be threatening. I'm giving up on this. I don't see any winning line. It's probably better to play a quiet move, and I'm not really good at finding the right ones. PS: Boy, was I off the mark. Better luck next Saturday. |

Jul-07-07 | | vortex2639: <HelaNubo> thanks for looking at that, I realized my mistake this morning when I got up. 27.Ne6 is definitely the move. |
Jul-07-07 | | 4i4mitko: no i did'n solved this actually i was looking at Re6 but i didn't like the checks Black queen can give so Nb5 is solving this problems |
Jul-07-07 | | Crowaholic: On afterthought, I should have at least found 26. Nb5!! worthy of consideration if I had used a little more systematic approach. The 26. Ne6 line I gave fails because of 28. ..Qd6+!, and 26. Nb5 is a nice way to prompt the queen to go somewhere where it cannot reach d6. But I doubt that I would have found 27. Re6! after 26. ..Qd2. |

 | | fm avari viraf: This is definitely a tough one as there are many possibilities for e.g. 25.Nxg6, 25.Ne6 but none could claim a clear win. Then I switched to 25.Nb5 driving the Queen but again 25...Qxb2 staying on the same diagonal where White can't force a win. The text move 25...Qd2 which I discarded for obvious reasons. Congrats to those who came very near. |
Jul-07-07 | | PAWNTOEFOUR: i would have continued Nxg5 or should i have admitted that? lol...i broke a cardinal rule today...i usually just sit around on the weekend and wait for monday's puzzle |
Jul-09-07 | | kevin86: White opens lines with a rook sac-black cannot resist the queen and knight attack. |
Jul-13-07 | | patzer2: The deflection 26. Nb5!! drives the Queen away to allow a decisive attack on the weakened castled position. |
