Apr-06-10  Matsumoto: This shows that Lagrave is a true genious, made of stellar material!!!
Apr-06-10  Shah Mat: around move 21 my patzer brain started to see a dark cloud on the horizon. something was afoot..but what? i knew white would lose this game due to the numerous pieces pushing themselves into the kingside.

i had no idea it would be such a spectacular mating attack. absolutely astonishing.

Apr-06-10  johnlspouge: < <An Englishman> wrote: Good Evening: I can't believe the Exchange sacrifice is sound, but it's hard not to love the rest. [snip] >

Toga gives the position about +0.2 P for White before the exchange sacrifice, about +0.8 P after. The sac is clearly outside a "matter of style", but not wildly so.

What's life without a little fun?

Apr-06-10  Eisenheim: great game
Apr-06-10  kevin86: An immortal!! Black "knights" a pawn and then uses an array of minor pieces and pawns to win quickly.

For fans of the movie: THE VIRGIN SUICIDES-there is a pun:"Trip(ped) Fontaine"

playground player: C'mon, CG--show us a game in which underpromotion doesn't win! In which, in fact, it blows up in the underpromoter's face. Just so we don't get the impression that it always, always works.

chrisowen: Nice double edged tool is the Leaningrad, you ally the kingside pawns and breakthrough. This lifts the lid off Lagrave's attempts previously. Black sacs queen and rook yet it is white who has the bone of contention. Once Qc6, disorders in the yard coughing up a mate. Shift in the knight promotion, digs his crypt. 11.Bxf8 23..Qxd5 wow what a wicked game to play.
Apr-06-10  dzechiel: Impressive!
Apr-06-10  Once: Astonishing game. It kind of reminds me of all those silly "1001 things you must do before you die" books. You know, 1001 books you must read, 1001 movies you must see and so on.

Here black seems determined to tick off as many moves as he can from the book I intend to write one day "1001 chess moves you must play before you die". Let's see - queen sac, underpromotion to a knight, king hunt, rook sac, discovered checkmate with a pawn move, and a mate with two bishops, knight and king.

Humbling.

Apr-06-10  drpoundsign: WOW! Great Queen (and other) sacs. Ali-Frasier fight for sure! The white D pawn, ironically is what made it all possible. Otherwise white could parry with checks (and mate.)
Apr-06-10  DarthStapler: Is that exchange sac part of theory?
Apr-06-10  pferd: Maybe not so pretty but 34...Bh3+ 35.Kh1 Bf1+ 36.Bf5 Rxf5# seems obvious and rather faster.
Apr-06-10  mworld: a game at that level, and yet pulling off all those moves?!?!

<Once> i'd say you summed that one up ;)

Apr-06-10  Andrew Chapman: <Maybe not so pretty but 34...Bh3+ 35.Kh1 Bf1+ 36.Bf5 Rxf5# seems obvious and rather faster.>How about 35.Kg3?
Apr-06-10  SpiritedReposte: I make exchange sacs like this all the time...Then I get crushed in 4 moves.
Apr-06-10  laskersteinitz: Vachier-Lagrave should be the FIDE nominee for the next Candidates tournament.
Apr-07-10  pferd: Good point. I think I thought Black's g pawn was covering g3 (and g1!)

How about 35.Kg3?>

Jul-20-10  5hrsolver: the photo shows the black king at g4. I wonder what line they were looking at in the post-game analysis.

There are lines in the kibitzes where White gives away his LSB to go for perpetual check, and this seems to be such a line. How exactly it came about, though, I leave to better analysts.

Unfortunately, we don't know whose move it's supposed to be. White to move can try <1.d7>, and it looks like Black can't mate before the pawn promotes, so he'd have to give up material. Black to move plays 1...Kg5 and White has no time for any such nonsense. (2.Qe7+ Kf4).

Aug-08-10  James Bowman: Truly to be ranked with immortal games which are but a few, those are old school tactics supremely implimented, what can this young genius do I hope much.
Oct-11-10  sevenseaman: A top class game. It has a compelling flow.
Oct-12-10  kellmano: I echo the plaudits for this game.

I saw a picture of MVL for hte first time recently. He looks nothing like he ought to.
