Oct-03-08  dzechiel: <Frankly: Am I missing something? Why is 37. Qxf7 necessary? Why not play 37.Bxg6+ right away (with mate on g8 after that)? This was the line as I saw it, and it seems to work.>

Black could play 37...fxg6 and white no longer has a checkmate, and must settle for a perpetual check draw.

Oct-03-08  HelaNubo: dzechiel, I also initially thought that Black is threatening Qxg4#. But there is a shining protecting queen in b4 avoiding that (unless one takes it away blundering with 35. Qf8 or similar). The real threat is 35... Qg2+ 36. Kh4 Qxh2#.
Oct-03-08  e4knightf3: Ridiculously easy compared to the two previous days puzzle, and I think everyone had seen the Bxg6+ line, but Rh8+ line is a very nice combo and one that not many of us would have chosen over Bxg6+, but who knows - if we had lots of time on the clock, we always strive to find something nicer(unique)- don't we?
Oct-03-08  lost in space: Easier than yesterday. A forced way to mate and no sescpae for Black:

35. Rh8+ Kxh8
not better is 35...Kg7 36. Qf8#

36. Qf8+ Kh7 (only move) 37. Qxf7+ Kh8 (only move) 38. Qf8+ Kh7 (only move) 39. Bxg6+ Kxg6 (only move) 40. Qg8#

Oct-03-08  stacase: I agree with "Frankly" above on 37 Bxg6 and I agree with nearly everyone else, way too easy for a Friday!
Oct-03-08  macphearsome: quite simply forced! I didn't get it simply because i figured friday would be too difficult, and I didn't look for anything forcing!

how silly of me

Oct-03-08  Alphastar: In my opinion it would've been a friday puzzle if it was 1 move longer (position after 33. ..Bxf3).
Oct-03-08  MostlyAverageJoe: < Frankly: Am I missing something? Why is 37. Qxf7 necessary? Why not play 37.Bxg6+ right away>

Because 37...fxg6 draws.

Oct-03-08  zooter: <Alphastar: In my opinion it would've been a friday puzzle if it was 1 move longer (position after 33. ..Bxf3).>

Yes, I tried to imagine the entire sequence and my entire vision was getting foggy even though i knew the answer

Oct-03-08  seagull1756: I didn't know it was Tuesday today - at least let's all pretend to be proud we can calculate 6 (!) moves ahead
Oct-03-08  VooDooMoves: Black is threatening mate with 35...Qxg4 so if white wants more than to defend all moves must be forcing (read 'checks'). Only two candidates: 35. Bxg6+ and 35. Rh8+

A) 35. Bxg6+ fxg6 36. Qe7#

A1) 35. Bxg6+ Kxg6 36. Qd6+ Kg7 37. Qf6+ Kh7 38. Rh8#

A3) 35. Bxg6+ Kxg6 36. Qd6+ Kh7 37. Qf6 Qxg4#. Maybe in this variation white can give a few spite checks on 37before resigning but since it holds for black let's check;

B) 35. Rh8+ Kg7 36. Qf8#

B1)35. Rh8+ Kxh8 36. Qf8+ Kh7 37. Qxf7+ Kh8 38. Qf6+! better than any other check as this keeps control of the dark squares and g6. now:

B1.1) 38...Kh7 39. Bxg6+ Kg8 40. Qf7+ Kh8 41. Qh7#

B1.2) 38...Kg8 39.Bc4+ Kh7 40.Qf7+ Kh8 41.Qg8#

B1.3) 38... Kg8 39. Bc4+ Rd5 40. Bxd5+ Bxd5 41. Qd8+ Kmoves 42. Qxd5 wins a pawn and if 42...Qf1+ 43. Qg2

B1.4) 38...Kg8 39. Bc4+ Bd5 40. Bxd5+ Rxd5 41. Qe6+ Kmoves 42. Qxd5

Oct-03-08  kirchhoff: Much easier than yesterday, but I will admit that I went down 38. Qe8+ followed by 39. Qg6+ with all paths leading to mate, but taking a few more moves than was necessary.
Oct-03-08  VooDooMoves: I missed the mate :( I knew I got it too quickly for friday. Shoulda coulda woulda looked harder but...
Oct-03-08  VooDooMoves: Why mate when you can grab a pawn and sit there trying to win a difficult endgame beating yourself up for missing the mate earlier. The thoughts getting so distrcting that you hang your queen and end up losing. Yeah! :/
Oct-03-08  Trigonometrist: The mate threat by black eliminates any white move except the checking ones.....
Oct-03-08  Marco65: <kirchhoff> 38.Qe8+ Kg7 39.Qxg6+ Kf8 and now? 40.Qf6+ Kg8 41.Bc4+ Bd5 end of fun, maybe 40.Qxh6+ ?

chrisowen: A more difficult puzzle pls, this is too easy. I'd think it more stimulating reading a copy of your FT sir.
Oct-03-08  JG27Pyth: I think this one was a "make-up call" for the toughy yesterday. But you had to get the mate for full credit IMO... no full credit here... but I didn't look terribly hard either... too bad, beautiful mate.
Oct-03-08  Pantagruel: True, this one was easier than most Fridays. But that's not a bad thing; it's fun for us non-GMs to get a Friday puzzle once a year.
Oct-03-08  Frankly: Yeah, ok, guys, *blush*, better to work it out properly first than to post the question too precipitately! Apologies for 37 Bxg6
Oct-03-08  whiteshark: I missed the crowning achievement of this combination, <39.Bxg6+>. :('
Oct-03-08  kirchhoff: <Marco65:> Right after I posted I read VooDooMoves' analysis and realized that I had missed the 41. Bd5 defense. I've spent a few minutes trying to get 40.Qxh6+ to work, but keep finding paths where Black escapes. Sigh. Maybe better luck tomorrow.
Oct-03-08  Bratek: It was probably first time that I got a Friday puzzle.Quite quickly. All the moves are forcing. In my opinion it should be a Wednesday.
Oct-03-08  Philidor: Difficult...?
Oct-03-08  TrueBlue: Today was easy, even I got it right away. Yesterday was very hard.
