Sep-20-14  Dr. J: From Chigorin - Schiffers First Match (1878):

Match conditions were to be that the winner would be the first to win seven games, but Chigorin was the victor after winning 6 games to Schiffer's three. Chigorin explained it thus: After ending the ninth game, Schiffers proposed playing it from White's 18th move and regarding it as another official game. This game also ended with Chigorin's victory.

The final moves of that original game were: 18...d5 19.e5 Rxe5 20.Bxf6 gxf6 21.Nd4 Bxc3 22.Nxc6 Rd6 23.Rb8+ Kd7 24.Ne5 Bxe5 25.Qg4+ Re6 26.Qg8 Re7 27.Rd8+ Kc6 28.Rc1+ Kb6 29.Rb8+ Ka5 30.Qg4 Bc3 1-0

Nov-30-14  Knight13: If Black intended to castle Queenside, he should have stopped 9. Bb5 8... a6. Also, 12... Qe5 is slightly better. And I'm not so sure about 22... Rd7; I prefer 22... d5.

Tabanus: So this is Game 10, I suppose. Should Game 9 be uploaded?

Tabanus: 365Chess adds (for Game 9):

18...d5 19.e5 Rxe5 20.Bxf6 gxf6 21.Nd4 Bxc3 22.Nxc6 Rd6 23.Rb8+ Kd7 24.Ne5 Bxe5 25.Qg4+ Re6 26.Qg8 Re7 27.Rd8+ Kc6 28.Rc1+ Kb6 29.Rb8+ Ka5 30.Qg4 Bc3 <31.Qf4 Qa3 32.Rcb1 Qc5+ 33.Kh1 Re1+ 34.Rxe1 Bxe1 35.Rb7 c6 36.d4> 1-0

I also wonder where the dates of the 10 games are from.

Pawn and Two: <Tabanus> The game score you provided for game 9 of the 1st Chigorin - Schiffers match, is the same game score as in the book, "Mikhail Chigorin The First Russian Grandmaster", by Alexander Khalifman & Sergei Solovikov. This book provides a date for only game 1 of this match, and that date is March 6, 1878. This book provides the game scores for all 10 games of the match, and states that Chigorin won this match against Schiffers by a score of +7-3=0.

I think the full game score for game 9 should be uploaded to the chessgames.com database.

Tabanus: <Pawn and Two> Thanks. And uploaded! But without exact date in March 1878.
