Feb-23-11 | | newzild: My first instinct is 30...Qxg2+ 31. Qxg2 Bxg2, with a clearly won position. However, that's too obvious to be the answer. Next I saw 30...h2+ 31. Kh1 Bxg2+ 32. Qxg2 Qxg2+ 33. Kxg2 Rxg1. This looked too prosaic for a puzzle, but I couldn't see anything better. Turns out there was nothing better. All family and friends in Christchurch survived the quake. A few have destroyed homes - sewage coming up through the floors and stuff like that. I'm still finding it hard to think about everyday life. |

Feb-23-11 | | VincentL: "Medium/Easy".
After a couple of false starts (Qh2+ h2 followed by Bxe2) the sequence I see is: 30.....h2+ 31. Kh1 Bxg2+ 32. Qxg2 Rxf1+ 33. Qxf1 Qxe3 and black emerges a rook (and pawn)
up.
These moves are all forced.
Let´s check. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | VincentL: Well, there is more than one winning line here, but the net result of each is similar. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | alachabre: Plain to see, it's mate on g2 if the queen can be induced to move, so the first candidate move I see is 30. ... Ra2
Let's see how that works. Um, not so good - 31. Qxa2, no progress. 30. ... Bxe2
31. Rxg3 Rxf1+ and Black's won a rook, but oops, 31. Rxg3 is check. Hey wait, there's a sneaky second black rook pawn!
30. h2+ Kh1
31. Bxg2+ Qxg2 (so far, so forced)
32. Rxf1+ Qxf1
33. Ra1
and now lose the queen or the king. Or not, it seems I've overlooked, 33. ... Rxg3+, so
33. Qxe3 Kxh7
leaves Black a rook to the good, and still with a passed h pawn. There might be more in the variation that will come out as it's played, but for now, this looks like the winning line. I don't see that White can regain the initiative with queen checks after the dust settles. |

Feb-23-11 | | Lennonfan: I missed the rook on f3?? Doh |

Feb-23-11 | | alachabre: <once>, re your description of rugby vs. American football, you only left out one thing: rugby is an order of magnitude less entertaining. HTH. ;-) |

Feb-23-11 | | alachabre: Spammer <tuxedoknight> is now on my "ignore" list. |

Feb-23-11 | | patzer2: <newzild: My first instinct is 30...Qxg2+ 31. Qxg2 Bxg2, with a clearly won position.> After 30...Qxg2+ 31. Qxg2 Bxg2?? it's a clearly "won position" but not for Black. click for larger viewFrom here White turns the tables and has a mate-in-two with 32. Rg3+ Kh8 33. Rxf8#. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | kevin86: I followed the text but reversed the bishop and queen moves (31 and 32)-comes out the same way-I think. |

Feb-23-11 | | estrick: < gmalino: <Oh, and the singing of the national anthem is usually in tune and in time.> And, you forgot, your anthem is much more beautiful, stronger, more rhytmical then the one played at the other end of the pond.....> BTW, the tune to which Francis Scott Key's poem about the battle for Fort McHenry was set was originally a British drinking song with some tawdry lyrics that was popular in the early 1800s. It's difficult to sing due to it's wide range, but they used to say if you could sing another verse (there were about 8) it proved you weren't too drunk to have another round. |

Feb-23-11 | | TheFocus: Here is the University of Hawaii doing the HAKA:

Feb-23-11 | | redorc19: I analysed 33...Ra2+ which is better in my own opinion. |

Feb-23-11 | | Once: <newzild> Good to hear that none of your family were hurt, although the damage to homes can be heartbreaking. Putting all the jokes and silly stuff to one side, our thoughts are with you. |

Feb-23-11 | | TheFocus: <Once> I bet that was an INTENSE game. Warriors! What makes the grass grow?
Blood, blood, blood! |
|
Feb-23-11 | | lost in space: Saw this continuation right away:
30... h2+ 31. Kh1 Bxg2 32. Qxg2 Qxg2+ 33. Kxg2 Rxf1 and White can choose to lose due to queening of the h-pawn or to play on a rook down. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | stst: The more forced line, leaving less room for White:
30. ... Ph2+
31. Kh1 Bxg2+
32. QxB RxR+
33. QxR QxR
Black is a R & P up.
Depending on whether
34. Qg2+ or KxP,
Black can go 34... Kh8 or Ra2+,
and White's Q is not enough to defend Black's Q & R attack.
At best for White, after exchange of Q, Black's R and P will decide. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | turbo231: <redorc19: I analysed 33...Ra2+ which is better in my own opinion.> Yes Ra2+ is the killer ,I was able to promote at h1=Q. I played against Houdini and he resigned! That doesn't happen very often. After Ra2+ Houdini had to move to g3, if he had moved to h1, Rf8xRf1 would have been mate. Houdini had to move to g3, allowing h2 to promote, first I Rf8xRf1 then h2h1=Q. I had a Queen and 2 rooks against one rook so Houdini resigned. I played the game better than Ozols did, also on the first try. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | WhiteRook48: argh i tried the stupid 30...Ra1 |
|
Feb-23-11 | | takchess: I saw this game and felt I had to wait till after work and try to solve it. I tried a bunch of moves including hxg and bxg (dismissed) as well as an immediate Ra2 and Ra3. I eventually settled on a line much like Lennon fan without trading queens but trading rooks on g1 and then taking the e3 rook by queen. A position which I would need to spend some time on during a game. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | Moonwalker: I wasn't sure if I'd solved this because I picked ♖a2+ but glad the kibitzers and computers agree that it was the best move, I don't get those often enough! Probably only got it because it caught my eye before ♖xf1 as it was more forcing (comes with check) and protects the h2 pawn for an eventual overwhelming material advantage. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | Bignevermo: yo Once...Rugby is played here too! :)(yes U.S.) second row baby..... always wanted to be eighth man though.... and chess? more humbling i am afraid!! :) |
|
Feb-23-11 | | soberknight: I had the same line as Patriot, with Rxf1 as the third move then Qxe3. After years of not doing these puzzles, I'm satisfied that I noticed what the issues were in the position (not Bxe2 and white mates). But not seeing the promotion win from the beginning was a miss. A cute ending. |
|
Feb-23-11 | | Gypsy: Saw all three winning lines after 30...h2+; missed that 30...hxg2 is nearly equally devastating. |
