Phony Benoni: I think today's puzzle was difficult because it was so easy. It was more of a common game situation, and the solution was really quite obvious. However, when you're in Puzzle Mode it's easy to overlook the simple.

We often get the comment that "I never would have found that in a game." I venture to say that most of us would have found today's solution in a game. You just have to trade a piece and execute a one-move double attack. We do that sort of thing in games all the time; in fact, it's often the first thing we look for.

Sure, there were a few details to be taken into account, but then our games are usually a bit sloppy tactically as well.

This doesn't explain why Black not only missed it, but actually walked into it with 18...Ne4. Sometimes, I think we take ourselves (and our ratings) too seriously, and try to play beyond our capabilities or the possibilities of the position. I wouldn't be surprised if Black just got wrapped up in some deep positional/tactical bling, and got fancy when he should have just been playing chess.

Mar-01-11  stst: very late, full day's work, bed time...
just one more glimpse....
normally if no follow-up on direct attacks or sacs, the other approach is to win material... this tuesday puz appears to be one of such...
then the double rook gives the initial clue... also B on e5 eyeing, not g7 but actually on c7 ==> a N move to expose the double R ==> NxN, any (PxN will be most natural) then right there Rc7

... forgive my old notation (I somewhat like those things...NxN, etc.)

OK, this one deserves two * since it's a concealed material win! Now, bed time!!

Mar-02-11  consul: I agree with <Phony Benoni>, even if i missed the solution.

Well that week was pretty confusing.

pittpanther: Is this Sunday or Monday?
Apr-01-24  BxChess: Tough for a Monday. I see that this has previously appeared as a Tuesday and a Thursday puzzle. Maybe Wednesday will prove to be the correct level.
Apr-01-24  Mayankk: Easy to spot if you come out of the sacrificial mindset we are in for a Monday puzzle.

Black has a weak c7 square, defended twice but attacked thrice. Also it splits Black Bishop and Queen. 20 Rc7 Rxc7 21 Rc7, followed by 22 Rxb7 is therefore an obvious sequence, probably so obvious that it gets hard to spot in a puzzle.

Of course prior to that we have to confirm that there isn't anything else more forcing. 20 Qg4 f6 doesn't lead anywhere, neither do funky moves like 20 Bxe4.

Apr-01-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: Didn't feel it so easy, but I only saw: 20. Rc7 Qd8 21. Rxb7. In the case of 20... Qd5 21. Rxe7 f6 22. Bc7 Kf8 23. Rc5 Qxa2 24. Bd6 Rxc5 25. Rxb7+ Kg8 26. dxc5... with 2 extra ♗.
Apr-01-24  mel gibson: Not an easy Monday puzzle.
Was it an April fool's day joke? LOL.
I thought 20. Qg4 which SF says is almost a draw.

Stockfish 16 says:

20.Rc7

(20. Rc7 (1.Rc7 Rxc7 2.Rxc7 Qxc7 3.Bxc7 Rc8 4.Bb6 Bd5 5.Bc5 Bxc5 6.Qc2 g6 7.dxc5 b4 8.Bxe4 Rc6 9.Kg2 h5 10.Bxd5 exd5 11.Qa4 Rxc5 12.Qe8+ Kg7 13.Qe5+ Kg8 14.Qb8+ Kg7 ) +5.37/46 225)

score for White +5.37 depth 46.

Apr-01-24  saturn2: 20.Rc7 forks queen and bishop. After Rxc7 21.Rxc7 black has to find an answer to the same question and he has none.
Apr-01-24  Cecco: Hi, <King.Arthur.Brazil>. After 20. ... Qd5 21. Rxe7 f6, according to the engine there is a mate in 8 starting with 22. Qg4 Rxc1+. But on the board I'm sure I would have played 22. Bc7 like you.

Teyss: <Mayankk: Easy to spot if you come out of the sacrificial mindset we are in for a Monday puzzle.> Well said, I would have solved it if it had been submitted on a Wednesday, as <BxChess> pointed out. Hopefully.

Not really an April's fool treat. This one is more like it: mate in 1*

OhioChessFan: <Simple not typical easy Monday puzzle,>

13 years ago, some of us commented that it was too hard for a Tuesday puzzle. I am greatly amused that this many years later on April 1, they made it a Monday puzzle.

Apr-02-24  TheaN: Bit tough to take full credit, given I had to do this a day later and decided to skip to the end and reverse the last move. However, a rook move on the c-file was clearly visible in my peripheral vision... yeah that makes it significantly easier. Still though, I do kind of enjoy the 'joke' to make a non-sac hard Tuesday puzzle a Monday puzzle. Lets be honest, this would be easier over the board than a puzzle.

Just to be clear,

I'm able to see how you're reaching into areas like "dove tub" and "dig nug boa". These are areas that Stockfish, Alpha Zero, and the like will never be able to address whatsoever.

Believe me when I say, I know how difficult it must be for you to find yourself in such a rarified atmosphere of understanding our noble game.

I also know the difficulty is only increased in sharing your insights with the world at large; knowing there won't be a player or enthusiast who can decipher the depths of the wisdom you're offering, no matter how much they want to.

Once again, I want to empathize with and acknowledge your sacrifice and generous contribution to this site.
