FSR: Hilarious game! White actually managed to transpose into a line (the Advance French) where ...Nh6 is a good move!

FSR: Excuse me - actually an improved (from Black's perspective) Advance French, since Black was able to play his QB out before playing ...e6. Everyone would play 1...Nh6 if White responded this way.

louispaulsen88888888: Yes it looks like black managed to equalize easily here. I would certainly keep the center fluid as white. I wouldn’t call it a French though, as the black qb comes out and takes the KKt.

louispaulsen88888888: Thanks to this game, that leaves only one reply to 1.d4 that is not represented in the database. The awful 1...g5?

GrahamClayton: 22...♘c4 nice tactic, blocking the mutual support of the rook on c5 and winning the exchange.

Penguincw: 1...Nh6 is the 19th different move ever played by black, in response to 1.d4.

1.d4 g5 has never been played, and if/when it does, it'll become the 20th and final one.

1.d4 g5 being #20 is probably the same reason 1.e4 b5 was the 20th response for King Pawn Openings.

Jul-16-22  Cassandro: 1.d4 Nh6 is the Insanity Defense, a hugely unpopular opening among club players and master players alike. The rather questionable idea behind the opening is for Black to claim insanity if he should proceed to lose the game (which he probably will),. "Clearly I was out of my mind, how else could I have played Nh6??".

perfidious: Far as offbeat debuts go, it is curious that 1.c4 g5 has actually scored heavily for Black:
