Sep-28-12  dzechiel: I realize I have been away for a while, but this doesn't look at all "difficult" to me.

It's a forced mate-in-three starting with 30...Rxf3+ 31 gxf3 Rxf3+ 32 Kg2 Qf1#.

Doesn't matter which rook you start with.

  sorokahdeen: First!

Interesting to see what is difficult for you and what is easy and why. The rook sac (either rook ...xf3) seemed obvious whereas something involving a knight might leave me mystified.

It will be interesting to see if anyone else finds it obvious.

  Phony Benoni: OK, that's enough. I've been suspicious before, but it's now obvious we've got a New World Order as far as difficulty is concerned.

This is an absolutely straightforward mate in three, starting with either rook. Considering Black's plight he can only consider checking moves, so it's not even hard to find.

Sep-28-12  a q maclanahan: Got it. 30... Rfd3+ 31. gf (forced) Rf3+ 32. Kg2 Qf1#. Simple.
Sep-28-12  White Star: Black is about to be mated, so he has to move fast! 30) ..R(f) x f3 does the trick, followed by 31) ..Rxf3, which ends the game; better than 31) ..qxf3 which allows some slippery moves and an uncertain outcome
Sep-28-12  dick50: White is threatening mate in one move on h8. The only way to save Black King is to mate White King before White gets a chance to play Qh8. Fortunately Heavy artillery of Black can accomplish the task.

30 R(any)xf3+ gxf3(what else) 31 Rxf3+ Kg2 32 Qf1++

Is it Monday or I am missing something!

Sep-28-12  fearnotofman: The easiest Friday ever. This feels closer to a Tuesday.
Sep-28-12  Dr. J: Yes, something is wrong. This is barely a Monday puzzle, and I do not see how any plausible sort of oversight could have made it seem difficult.
Sep-28-12  JG27Pyth: Well... I predict a chorus of easiest-Friday-ever's. And perhaps it's justified... with all three of black's pieces eyeing f3 it's the first sac to consider. If <you>'re like <<me>> <you> first caluculated Rfxf3+ gf Qxf3+ and saw the king could run awhile and then calculated the Rxf3+ recapture and saw how quickly and forcingly the mate came because of the fortuitous placement of the h pawn. Problem solved.

  chessgames.com: We accidentally posted a Tuesday reject here with 30...? instead of the fine Friday puzzle A Naumann vs F Kroeze, 2009 21...?

Our apologies.

  Phony Benoni: Eight puzzles a week...
Sep-28-12  Checker2: Hey <dzechiel>, good to see you back; I've been missing your posts. This one does seem too easy for a Friday, but that evens out the more-difficult-than-usual puzzles earlier in the week. Although I will confess I was trying to make a needlessly comlicated Qd2+ Kg3 Rxf3 line work when I realized the KISS principle applied with the line you posted.
