chessgames.com: That's it for today--see you tomorrow at 9am EST.
Dec-03-11  Ulhumbrus: Back again briefly. So Carlsen has won. I will have to take a look at the last few moves so see whether <SteinitzLives> was right to say that Howell would get cooked in time pressure

Dec-03-11  Ulhumbrus: 28...Re7 may have been a mistake made in time pressure.

An alternative to 30...Red7 is 30...Kg7 hindering the King side attack. On 31 Rxa7 Qc2 heads for d2.

howell was cooked - unfortunately carlsen's brain was a little cooked in the end too, allowing black to extend the game with correct play. 40... resigns (or whatever) was not optimal for black ;o)

anyway, after 40... Qxf5 (only move) i see nothing but "white wins" as a logical conclusion to the game, assuming carlsen would've played 41. Rxh6

both 41... Qb5 42. Qg8 and 41... c5 42. Rh8 looks like the intro to a lost ending for black. white's passers in the a- and h-file will decide the game eventually - in particular the h-passer looks menacing.

chancho: Baby face assassin strikes again.
Dec-03-11  bronkenstein: Always nice to see MC playing sharply for a change , though the `sharpness` here was pretty much under control - he was never in danger of losing.
Dec-03-11  frogbert: 36. Qxa7! (intending Qc7-d8 to mate) and 39. Rf1! (to keep the protection of the f5-pawn that was vital in the mating net) were the two precise continuations for carlsen in the time scramble.

36. Rh8 doesn't really change much, it just wastes one move and black can't do anything, while 39. Qb8? allows black to continue the game for another 20-30 moves, although i'm 99% certain carlsen would've converted also after 40... Qxf5 41. Rxh6

the black king is far from safe, and rather than perfect defence by black from here on, it wouldn't be strange if howell would've failed to be accurate. and it's lost even with accurdate defence by black.

possible lines:

a) 41... Qb5 42. Qg8

a1) 42... Rd1 43. Rh7 Be6 44. Rh8 Qb6 45. Qe8+ Kd6 46. Qd8+ Qxd8 47. Rxd8+ Bd7 48. Re3

click for larger view

a2) 42... Qe5 43. Rh8 Rd3 44. a4 Qc7 45. Qb8 Qxb8 46. Rxb8 Rd5 47. Re3 f5 48. h4

in all the endings following a queen exchange like in the above, black's pawns are stopped while white keeps at least one passer while being the exchange up. black has to exchange queens sooner or later due to his exposed king; with both queens on, it's black who gets mated (or lose more material) eventually.

b) 41... c5 42. Rh8 Rd1 43. Re3 Rd3 44. Qd8+ Ke6 45. Re1 Rxc3 46. Qb6+ Ke7 47. Ra8! Qe5+ 48. Kh1 ... the black king is in deep trouble:

Dec-03-11  lost in space: Back again and as expected Carlsen won. What a nice move: 33. Rc8! Haven't seen this move when I left (move 31)
Dec-03-11  badest: <frogbert> Very nice and instructive diagrams! Still a bit amazing (to me) to resign so close to time control. Qxf5 is not ultra hard to find, and would give some chances for a draw (it is not like Carlsen has not blown bigger advantages before ...).

HeMateMe: Terrific chess. I guess when you're rated 200 points over someone already in the 2500s, this can happen.
Dec-03-11  frogbert: badest, i guess howell simply didn't see his "only move" and thought he was dead lost. seemingly both players missed black's (temporary) save.

disclaimer: i haven't seen the press conference yet.

SteinitzLives: Until he tells us, there is no way of knowing what was going through Howells' mind during the last few moves of intense timescramble, before resigning with just a few seconds left before time control.

Rationality gives way to impulsiveness, mind to nerves, etc.

Dec-03-11  Atking: Impressive! 12.NxNc6 14.f4 15.BxN! 16.e5! 17.f5 18.Ne4 all great until the end Black pawn up means nothing except weakness. It looks Capablanca at his best days.
Dec-03-11  James Bowman: Very nice I think Carlsen is clearly stepping up a notch. His games have been more forcefull and less subtle lately, not that there is anything wrong with the former just that the latter is sometimes required.

Even if he missed some opportunities that computers might have found the fact that he so skillfully created them is important not to over look. The kid seems to put his valley's behind him and is on to a new summit.

Penguincw: What happened here? Resignation? Time forfeit? Cellphone rang?
Dec-03-11  Kaspablanca: I said before that Carlsen will have 3 sure wins against the British player, maybe a draw against Adams.
Dec-03-11  Bobwhoosta: <Kaspablanca>

Not so my friend, not so. Carlsen has a blood vendetta against Adams, expect him to unleash.... better weapons than last time anyway!!!

Dec-03-11  wordfunph: "Decent enough game, disappointed I couldn't calculate properly at the end."

- GM Magnus Carlsen

Dec-03-11  Kaspablanca: Bobwhoosta: I should be more specific, i meant the British players and maybe only Adams could have a draw against Carlsen.
