Jul-22-13 | | TheaN: Monday 22 July 2013
<48.?>
An incredibly easy puzzle even for a monday, cause this one doesn't even involve a slightly out of the box combo to win. White simply destroys the final obstruction on the h-file: <48.Rxh7+ Kxh7 49.Rh6# 1-0> take note that even Qh2+ works, white's position is too strong. |
Jul-22-13 | | TheaN: Typical how many solvers still associate the queen with a monday puzzle and go for 49.Qh2+. |
Jul-22-13 | | nottogoodabeginner: Yes it is an easy puzzle to solve but the key is getting to this position in the first place. That's my problem. |

 | | FSR: Monday already? 48.Rxh7+! Kxh7 49.Rh6#. |
Jul-22-13 | | Bartimaeus: <TheaN : Typical how many solvers still associate the queen with a monday puzzle and go for 49.Qh2+.> In this case, I think it has less to do with using a Queen for a Monday puzzle and more to do with what follows intuitively for the given position. In a mating attack, it seems a natural tendency to bring your most powerful piece into play (if available). At least in my case, the first instinct was to play Qh2+ after Kxh7 and i wasn't even thinking of using the Queen considering it to be a Monday puzzle. Oddly enough, the fact that it was a Monday puzzle helped me to find the faster mate. When i saw that the Qh2+ line was leading to a mate in 4 moves, i felt a little suspicious and thought this to be a tad long for a Monday puzzle. I looked again and then found the shorter mate. OTB, i would have gone for Qh2+ without any hesitation. No point in beating about the bush once you find a clear mating line. |

Jul-22-13 | | Nick46: Got all the moves -> ridiculously easy -> wouldn't give a peanut for black's position. What day(s) the Qsac? |
Jul-22-13 | | morfishine: FWIW: This game was from the under-12 division |
Jul-22-13 | | whiteshark: <48. Rxh7+ Kxh7 49. Rh6#>, and that's it! |
Jul-22-13 | | Lambda: Nothing wrong with Qh2+. When you've seen a forced mate, there's little point looking for a faster one. |
Jul-22-13 | | awfulhangover: OMG, I belong to the Qh2 patzers. |
Jul-22-13 | | YetAnotherAmateur: Drat, I also picked Qh2+, after seeing that black could only throw away his knight and queen to delay the inevitable. But hey, at least it wasn't a queen sac Monday. |
Jul-22-13 | | JustWoodshifting: Black may have remained in the game for a while, but for an inevitable loss: 47.Bg5 Nxf5 48.Bxe7 Rxe7 49.Qg5 Rxg6 50.Qxe7 Rg7 51.Qf8+ Rg8 52.Qh6 Rg7 53.f6 Nxf6 54.Qxf6 Rf7 55.Qxe5+ Kg8 And Black should capitulate. |

bad for black no matter what before he goofed so,
which rook of course it is einger pinches oh low he, take looparch 48.Rxh7+ king had to recapture when,
g6 it slide over providing 49.rh6+ be l0 win longer mind debatable 49.Qh2+ hug the rail gg over now nh5 at door 50.Qxh5+ going have light I clean send, reinforcement up ahouse 50...Qh6 51.qxh6#. |
Jul-22-13 | | kevin86: The one rook sacs,the second rook mates. Not only is there no queen sac,there is not even mention of a queen-the queen CAN mate,but it is a lesser move. |
Jul-22-13 | | Alex56171: I love Sundays! 48. Rxh7+ Kxh7 49. Rh6# |

 | | OhioChessFan: You are a lot better than me. You love Sundays and I miss Mondays, Qh2+, alas. |
Jul-22-13 | | TheaN: <Bartimaeus: <TheaN : Typical how many solvers still associate the queen with a monday puzzle and go for 49.Qh2+.> In this case, I think it has less to do with using a Queen for a Monday puzzle and more to do with what follows intuitively for the given position.> Interesting viewpoint. It dependent on what white sees in advance I guess. The Bg5 has only vacanced h6 a move ago, so I guess it's kind of counterintuitive to see Rh6. The 'advantage' is that both lines work here, rather than just the mate in two. |

Anyway, it's funny how black's worst enemies are his own pieces. |
Jul-22-13 | | Doniez: But after Qxh7 and Kxh7, it's still the same ending, Rh6# or am I missing something? |
Jul-22-13 | | YouRang: <Doniez> The only point is that white would *have* to find Rh6# because the less-pretty Qh2+ (and subsequent mate) would not be an option. |
Jul-22-13 | | Doniez: Ok, thanks... |
Jul-22-13 | | BOSTER: <YouRang: It would have been slightly better had it been>. This is the pos. after 40...Bxg5 ,white to play.

After 41.Bxg5 if Qa5 (like in the game) 42.Rxh7+ Kxh7 43.Rh2+ Nh5 44.Rxh5+ Kg7 45.Bh6+ Kh8 46.Bf8+ Rh7 47.Rxh7+ Kxh7 48.Qh6#. |
Jul-23-13 | | eblunt: How about 42.Rxh7+ Kxh7 43 Bf6 any 44 Qh6 mate
Quicker than Qh2 ! |
Jul-23-13 | | eblunt: Oooops, apart from the fact it doeant work, forgot the king had moved and the Bish doesn't pin the Knight. Hmmmm back to drawing board. |
