bright1: I would think that White's last move was 32. dxc+ followed by Qb5. Perhaps Black ran out of time.

AylerKupp: I know that this was rapid chess but White's knight stayed on f5 from 13.Nxf5 until 28.Nd6 without being captured while the battle ranged around it. 15 moves! Can anybody see why it couldn't or shouldn't have been captured some time between Black's 13th and 27th moves?

I slid forward using Houdini 1.5a and at relatively low ply, d=20 (there were a lot of moves to go through and I didn't want to spend too much time on it!) it evaluated ...exf5 as Black's top move in 8 out of 15 opportunities, with evals ranging from [-0.91] to [6.00]. In 6 of the other 7 opportunities, it evaluated ...exf5 as the second best move, and the best move was always followed by ...exf5. Only on 17...Nxe4 was ...exf5 not considered as one of the top 2 moves by Black.

I've never seen anything like this!

  Penguincw: I agree with <AylerKupp>. Let's start with the first available moment, after 13.Nxf5. We capture (13...Nxf5). White <could> play 14.gxf4 Ng6 15.dxc6 bxc6 16.Nb5 Qc8 17.Nd6+ Nxd6 18.Qxd6.

This is a ♔♗♙ vs. ♔♘♘, which should be winning for black, but white has a more comfortable position. Let's try an engine.

The only convenient engine I have access to Little ChessPartner so from 13...exf5 14.gxf4 Nc5 15.Qd4 Rg8 16.Bh3 Nd6 17.e4 Bg7 18.e5.

This position is confusing. I got to go. <Maybe*> I'll ask a friend.

*No. ;)

tamar: 9 dxe5 is normal in this variation.

9 d5 is probably a transcription error.

Then the rest of the moves make sense.

tamar: Here is the score with the moves 8...e5 9 dxe5 substituted for 8...e6 9 d5.

See if that works.

AylerKupp: <tamar> Thanks, that works a lot better. I suspected that there was something wrong with the game score but I couldn't think of what it was. Although 9...Ne5 should be 9...Nxe5 for consistency and 28...Ref8 should be 28...Rf8 since the rook is on d1 after 23...Rfd1, unless the correct moves were actually 19.Rfd1 and 22.Rac1. Once you find errors in a game score it's hard to fully trust it anymore. I'll submit a database correction slip to chessgames.com.

tamar: There is still a question of why Sopiko resigned after 32 Rxc6

Sacrificial shock maybe, or a time forfeit?

The obvious 32...Kxc6 does not work because of 33 Qb5 Mate, but Black could block that with 32...Ne5, and might even be better.
