GrahamClayton: Sadler highlights this game in his new book "Study Chess With Matthew Sadler"

After White played 10. h3:

"And then I understood that I had one good positional move in this position. This one move changed everything for me."

The move was 10..g5, followed by 11...g4, securing the e5-square for his knight.

Oct-11-13  PhilFeeley: In the book, Sadler calls this the Basman Opening. He also wrote earlier at 10. h3:

"One of those life-defining moments. To be absolutely honest, I was wondering what had possessed me to play this opening in the morning round of this strong weekend tournament. I wasn't feeling that sharp-witted, I was already starting to fall behind on the clock, I was really missing my central pawn...and in a stunning moment of clarity, I realized that I really did not fancy losing like a complete idiot."

Quite the turnaround...

FSR: Who knew that 1...a6 followed by 2...h6 was so strong?

FSR: To White's credit, he held out slightly longer than the player of the white pieces in S Bibby vs M Basman, 1990.

perfidious: <FSR> It can be most interesting to have one of the players kibitz on a game, as Bibby did in his loss, his only kibitz at CG.

This opening looks fishy as all get out, but soon transforms into a type of Sicilian Kan where White has wasted time moving his queenside pawns, rather than developing his pieces. Hard to successfully play open Sicilians that way.

Nov-04-14  PhilFeeley: So how could white have refuted this?
