Apr-27-13 | | Sularus: got 17. Bf6 but failed to follow through. lolz. |
|
Apr-27-13 | | diagonalley: Bf6 seemed to be the only move which could progress the attack but, for the life of me, i could not visualise a way forward from there... brilliant |

Apr-27-13 | | vinidivici: Two thumbs up for the puzzle!! |
|
Apr-27-13 | | morfishine: Astonishing finish by White! Very pleasing
I was able to find <17.Bf6> but defended differently: 17...gxf6 18.Qg4+ Kh8 19.Rh5 f5 20.Qh4 f6 21.Rxh7+ Kg8 22.Qh6 Rf7 23.Rh8# |

After 19.Rh5 black has 19...Rg8! |

Better is perhaps 21...Bd7 22.Rad1 Ra7 23.Rh3! Bxh3 24.Rxd8 Rxd8 25.Qxf6+ Kg8 26.Qxd8+ Kg7 27.gxh3 ----
I didn't find Black's best defense 18...e5. Saw only 17.Bf6 gxf6 18.Re3 Rd8 19.Qh6 Qf8 20.Rg3+ Kh8 21.Qxf6+ |
|
Apr-27-13 | | whiteshark: <15...0-0> is flirting with disaster. After <15...Rb8 16.Re5 Qxa2> Black has ...Rb5 or ...Rb1 as defensive resource and the game would have been still in balance. click for larger view |

Apr-27-13 | | cyclon: I found this puzzle quite difficult really, maybe partly because of the absence of the majority of light pieces.
I'd start with the move;
17. Bf6 ( now it,s clear that Black can't play 17. -gxf6 because after 18. Re3 he has to give up his Queen to avoid mate. In such a passive position for the moment the situation with Q vs. R+B favours clearly White )
17. -Re8 ( threat was 18. Rg5. On account of 17. -h6 18. Re4 [ prevents 18. -Qf4 and intends 19. Rg4 ] is sufficient. 17. -Kh8 18. Qh6 Rg8 19. Rh5 mates )
18. Re3 ( maybe I'm wrong, but I found this to be a correct move here instead of either 18. Rg5, or 18. Re4 because Rook has to be located behind the Queen on the h-file )
19. -Qf4 ( now here, if 19. -g6, then 20. Qh4 and White intends 21. Rh3. Black can't play 20. -h5 because 21. g4 tears his King-side apart and 20. -e5 means admitting to 'hang - on' in the lost position. Yet, if Black moves 19. -Qf8, White continues with 20. Rh3 h6 21. Rg3 and only White plays to win ) 20. Bxg7 ( actually a forced move for White )
20. -Kxg7
21. Rf3 ( 21. Rg3+? )
21. -Qc7 ( the only move to cover the f7-square - 21. -Qh6? 22. Rxf7+ Kg6 23. Rf6+ ) 22. Qg5+ ( this quite natural move actually was difficult to find ) 22. -Kf8 ( in case of 22. -Kh8 23. Qf6+ Kg8 24. Rg3+ Qxg3 25. hxg3 White's got theoretically and also dynamically speaking a winning game ) 23. Qh6+ ( only so, 23. Qc5+? )
23. -Ke7 ( again, 23. -Kg8 24. Rg3+ wins )
24. Rxf7+ ( this was the move I had to find IN CONNECTION with 22. Qg5+ ) 24. -Kxf7
25. Qxh7+ wins the Queen. |
|
Apr-27-13 | | morfishine: <vinidivici> You are correct; The striking things about the game score are, first its obvious 21...Qe7 loses instantly to 22.exf6 while an immediate 21...fxe5 is crushed by 22.Rxd8 Rxd8 23.Qf6+ picking up the rook anyways Oh, and I definitely agree with your comment: <Two thumbs up for the puzzle!!> While I always try to avoid criticizing puzzles for having too many solutions or being too easy, this one really stands out and is deserving of high praise...Thanks for looking |
|
Apr-27-13 | | cyclon: I should have also checked Black's response 18. -e5 immediately to White's 18. Re3, BUT that move loses and actually lost much faster for Black. Somehow it just looked disastrous for Black without analyzing it particularly but just by a 'glance', yet I SHOULD have BECAUSE it was one of those moves that one must take into account. |
|
Apr-27-13 | | agb2002: The material is even.
Black threatens 17... f6.
The first idea that comes to mind is 17.Bf6:
A) 17... gxf6 18.Rg3
A.1) 18... Rd8 19.Qh6 Qf8 20.Rg3+ Kh8 21.Qxf6+ Qg7 22.Qxg7#. A.2) 18... Qf4 19.Rf3 Qe4 20.Rg3+ Kh8 21.Qh6 Rg8 22.Qxf6+ Rg7 23.Qxg7#. B) 17... g6 18.Qh6 and 19.Qg7#.
C) 17... Kh8 18.Qh6 gxf6 (18... Rg8) 19.Qxf6+ Kg8 20.Rg5#. D) 17... h6 18.Rg5 hxg5 19.Qxg5 g6 20.Qh6, etc.
E) 17... Rd8 18.Qg5 wins a rook at least.
F) 17... Re8 18.Qg4 g6 19.Rh5 Qf8 (prevents 20.Rxh7) 20.Qh4 gxh5 21.Qg5+ Qg7 22.Qxg7#. |
|
Apr-27-13 | | cyclon: I praise how White finished Black after 18. -e5 in the game-line 17. -gxf6, which I thought inferior to 17. -Re8. But I didn't find the game-line, that's a fact. White's 19. Qh6!! and 21. Rd3!! are forceful moves and by no means evident ones. |

 | | al wazir: <BUNA: Better is perhaps 21...Bd7 22.Rad1 Ra7 23.Rh3! Bxh3 24.Rxd8 Rxd8 25.Qxf6+ Kg8 26.Qxd8+ Kg7 27.gxh3> Yes, that works. Thanks. |
|
Apr-27-13 | | snakebyt: I tried 7 Qg4 f6 18 Bh6 but then Ra7 ouch. Rd3 to check Q is brilliant amazing! |
|
Apr-27-13 | | Patriot: 17.Bf6 looks strong. It stops the 17...f6 fork and creates the major threat of 18.Qg5: 17...gxf6 18.Re3 Rd8 19.Qh6
17...h6 18.Qg4 g6 19.Rh5 Kh7 20.Rxh6+
It seems black has nothing strong--just defensive tries. 17.Bf6 was pretty tough to find. |
|
Apr-27-13 | | schweigzwang: I can totally screw up a Monday, and decide after 45 seconds that 17.Bf6 is the best I'm going to find. I doubt that I could get the follow-through accurately, though. |
|
Apr-27-13 | | Patriot: <cyclon> Well said! This was very well played by "Alex". 21.Rd3 was especially beautiful. 18.e5 did not even occur to me, but it's one of those moves that makes white prove the bishop sac was well worth it! For me at least, defensive moves are hard to find when they don't seem forcing. But when a piece is sacrificed I had better look at non-forcing defensive tries as well--and there can be lots of them! |
