Nov-13-12  David2009: N Pogonina vs S Matveeva, 2012: This fine rapid-play win by Natalia Pogonina was the foundation for her progress to the second round: in the return rapid game Svetlana Matveeva had to win with White, built up a promising attack then lost her way (S Matveeva vs N Pogonina, 2012).

Here's the critical position (Black 36...?):

White is threatening Qc2+ picking up the Rook. Black blocked with 36...Qf5? allowing 37.Nxf7! exploiting the same tactic. The computer (Herr Fritz) gives 37...Kg6 as best, but in rapid play it is understandable that Black liquidated instead into an ending the exchange down with 37...Rxd4 so as to exploit the White King's apparent lack of shelter.

<David2009: ... but in rapid play it is understandable that Black liquidated instead into an ending the exchange down with 37...Rxd4 so as to exploit the White King's apparent lack of shelter.>

This lack of shelter led to a <MISSED WIN> for Black later in the game. 41 ... ♕f5-b1+! would have forced mate.

SHIPOV -> <Natalija just conducted a sound tactical operation and won an exchange, but now she loses her vigilance…

41.Rf8?

Any other reasonable move wins, but this one suddenly loses.

41…Ne2+?

Black mixes up the move order, which is very unfortunate. <<<After 41…Qb1+! 42.Kh2 Ne2 Svetlana would win immediately by 43.h4 Qg1+ 44.Kh3 Qh1+ 45.Kg4 Qxg2+ 46.Kh5 Qg6#.>>>>

Black's missed win, in Houdini-speak.
