The wins of Caruana look so unassuming but he nails them nevertheless. It somehow does not look impressive but it happens anyway. In this game looks like Anand shoot himself in one foot (exchange "sacrifice") and then shoot himself in another foot as well just to make sure he loses. Truly weak game. |

To repost something from the live kibitzing: <26.g3 would have been strong since the cxd6 possibility is very nagging for Black and restricts his options. And after 26...Nfg6 27.Rf3 Qe6 28.Rd3! Be8 (28...dxc5 29.Nxc5 winning material; 28...d5 29.exd5 Nxd5 30.Ne4 is very unpleasant for Black) 29.cxd6 Rxd6 30.Nc5 Qf6 31.Qf3! Black can't play 31...Qxf3 because it loses to the computer-move 32.Rxd6!! and the black queen will get trapped.> I should have mentioned, of course, the basic tactical point that in case of 26.g3! the "obvious" 26...Nxh3+ fails to 27.Bxh3 Bxh3 28.g4! trapping the bishop. Later in the line Black doesn't have to play 31...Qxf3, but with the knight forced to retreat like that from f4 White's position is of course much more comfortable than in the game. Btw, Caruana said after the game that he noticed the possibility of g3 on move 25 (24...Bd7 was meant to prevent that by putting pressure on h3, but this turns out to be illusory) and was very worried about it; on move 26, with c5 played, it would apparently be even stronger. |

Anand felt that he was getting outplayed and that it was time for some drastic measures - he figured that with the passed pawn and the knight on a5 he has compensation. |
