Feb-27-13  chessdgc2: Hey yall, Caruana gots this one and if there's anyone who don't believe it, stand on your head and eat peanut butter....
Feb-27-13  ACMEKINGKRUSHER: Anand needs to retire the championship 1
Feb-27-13  Eyal: <tamar: Actually the line Houdini gives may tempt Anand to play longer. By playing Ba8 c6 and Bb7 Anand could get rid of all the queenside pawns and wind up with this kind of position.>

If Anand went for something like that I think the game could have continued 46.Ba8 Ra2 47.c6 Rxa3 48.Bb7 Rxd3 49.Bxc8 Rxh3 50.Bxa6 Rc3 51.Bxb5 Ke7 followed by Kd6 - this looks like a rather easy win for Black, since here White is a pawn down on the K-side and wouldn't be able to maintain his Q-side pawns for long (if necessary, Black could sac the exchange for one of them and liquidate into a won pawn endgame).

Feb-27-13  AuN1: <<AuN1>sure, but he still had a won position at that point>

yeah. what i'm saying is that if he didn't take so long to make that move, he would have had more time later to find the moves that would have held his advantage instead of letting it dissipate.

Feb-27-13  chessdgc2: Eval: Your message was so interesting I had some pizza to it
Feb-27-13  Eyal: Also, 46.Bd5 can't keep the rook away from a2, because 46...Rd2 forces 47.Be4.
Feb-27-13  haydn20: Boris & Vlad still fighting in a tough position where Vlad has all the play still.
Feb-27-13  AuN1: i'd be shocked by anything other than a draw.
Feb-27-13  Eyal: Anand said to Hug & Pelletier that he was calculating 41.Ne5 and kept being bothered by 41...Rd1 (according to Houdini that's indeed Black's best move in such a case), so he wanted to unpin his bishop - which led him to the losing 41.Bg2? blunder.
Feb-27-13  haydn20: < AuN1: i'd be shocked by anything other than a draw. > And you got it--Boris had to survive a couple of tactical finesses, which he did with ease.

tamar: <Eyal> Yeah, I see it is hopeless now. Houdini thought it was won in either case, which might be right, but MarmotPFL correctly pointed out that Black could quash the whole idea.
Feb-27-13  lost in space: Caruana seems to be a stronger player than I expected (i Know, he has 2750, so he is good), but better than I expected). If he can win against Anand he can win against nearly everyone.
Feb-27-13  Merlot: This man should be in the Candidate tournament. He already proved can beat the World Champion.
Feb-27-13  Eyal: In the recent Anand vs Adams, 2012, Anand's losing blunder (Bc4??) also came on move 41. Not that it's rare in general - moves 40 ("just let me make it to the time control") & 41 ("Hey, I just made time control, now I can relax") are probably the most prone to blunders in chess.
Feb-27-13  csmath: Wow, this is truly amazingly weak display of Anand. Probably the worst game he played in the last 12 months. Not a good sign for the title defence.
Feb-27-13  csmath: <If he can win against Anand he can win against nearly everyone.>

Fabiano has taken all the important scalps so far. Kramnik has a soft spot for Fabiano in particular. The wins of Caruana look so unassuming but he nails them nevertheless. It somehow does not look impressive but it happens anyway.

In this game looks like Anand shoot himself in one foot (exchange "sacrifice") and then shoot himself in another foot as well just to make sure he loses. Truly weak game.

Feb-27-13  morfishine: 33.a3 looks like a lemon, or some type of citrus
Feb-27-13  Eyal: Speaking of lemons that came before the final one on move 41, 26.Qe1 looks like another. To repost something from the live kibitzing:

<26.g3 would have been strong since the cxd6 possibility is very nagging for Black and restricts his options. And after 26...Nfg6 27.Rf3 Qe6 28.Rd3! Be8 (28...dxc5 29.Nxc5 winning material; 28...d5 29.exd5 Nxd5 30.Ne4 is very unpleasant for Black) 29.cxd6 Rxd6 30.Nc5 Qf6 31.Qf3! Black can't play 31...Qxf3 because it loses to the computer-move 32.Rxd6!! and the black queen will get trapped.>

I should have mentioned, of course, the basic tactical point that in case of 26.g3! the "obvious" 26...Nxh3+ fails to 27.Bxh3 Bxh3 28.g4! trapping the bishop. Later in the line Black doesn't have to play 31...Qxf3, but with the knight forced to retreat like that from f4 White's position is of course much more comfortable than in the game. Btw, Caruana said after the game that he noticed the possibility of g3 on move 25 (24...Bd7 was meant to prevent that by putting pressure on h3, but this turns out to be illusory) and was very worried about it; on move 26, with c5 played, it would apparently be even stronger.

Feb-28-13  morfishine: <Eyal> 26.g3 is a remarkable resource!
Feb-28-13  rahulthemoron: Why did Anand not play Nxe5? What was he thinking? He has pulled off some remarkable wins sacrificing rook for knight, but i really don't see what he was trying to do here.
Feb-28-13  Eyal: <Why did Anand not play Nxe5? What was he thinking? He has pulled off some remarkable wins sacrificing rook for knight, but i really don't see what he was trying to do here.>

If you mean 29.Nxe5, it just loses to 29...Nxe3; the real options to Rxe5 were Re2 or Rd3, but White's position was getting rather unpleasant anyway. Anand felt that he was getting outplayed and that it was time for some drastic measures - he figured that with the passed pawn and the knight on a5 he has compensation.

Mar-02-13  znsprdx: Would someone please provide the forced winning line for Black - I realize it must be some kind of zugswang theme resulting in K&P vs k&r but it seems there are many tactical threats in White's favor due to knight forks.
Mar-02-13  Eduardo Bermudez: Caruana: third World Chess Champion born in Amèrica?
Mar-02-13  NGambit: <Eyal: In the recent Anand vs Adams, 2012, Anand's losing blunder (Bc4??) also came on move 41. And he blew the Yifan game by 42. ... Nf5. So there seems to be a pattern recently (w.r.t. Anand).
