Jul-13-20  malt: Did not post this one, last week, so

14.Rd8+ N:d8 15.Qe8#

Playing catch up.

Jul-13-20  Brenin: 11 ... a6 would have saved Black's skin. True last week, and still true today.

cu8sfan: This is like Deja-vu all over again!
Jul-13-20  Oxspawn: But <Phony Benoni> have some pity for Donald MacMurray - he has been replaying this position every Monday for 87+ years.
Jul-13-20  morfishine: Second verse, same as the first
Jul-13-20  Damenlaeuferbauer: After long thinking, the great American chess player and two-times U.S. champion Arnold Denker (his family name means "thinker" in German) finally found the mate in two moves with the rook sacrifice 14.Rd8+!,Nxd8 15.Qe8#. Unfortunately, his most famous game is his loss with the white pieces against Mikhail M. Botvinnik on the first board in the USSR vs. USA radio match just after the end of the Second World War, which marked the beginning of the Soviet supremacy for the next 3 or 4 decades.
Jul-13-20  sfm: "Pattern recognition" is a fundamental thing.

Like, if you have seen exactly the same position before, figured out the best move last time, and still can remember it, you will be able to play the right move with certainty!

Jul-13-20  jith1207: <: And what did I tell you about repeats>

What did <phony benoni> tell about repeats?

Diademas: For once, I'm fairly optimistic on going 7/7 this week.
Jul-13-20  Willem Wallekers: Thank you cg for repeating this puzzle because I forgot to visit you last Monday.
Jul-13-20  zb2cr: "You'll keep on singing it until you sing it right!"--punch line from at least two jokes I know.
Jul-13-20  Predrag3141: Thanks all for your entries. My favorite: <I'm fairly optimistic on going 7/7 this week>

Tabanus: I remember seeing this puzzle some days ago. So I do have some kind of pattern recognition.
Jul-13-20  pixel pusher: I got it!...keep 'em coming, baby, I'm on a roll!

shakisto: Maybe the guy who normally gives us new positions is on vacation this week, so we're getting reruns.
Jul-13-20  TheaN: I played 14.Qe8# because I already played 14.Rd8+ last week. Chesseption.
Jul-13-20  jith1207: Reruns wouldn't be so outlandish if it could be repeated from the wealth of past history of 19 years of <chessgames.com>.

52 weeks of 19 years sums up to 988 weeks.

Out of 988 weeks, the most recent week(s) upto even two years could be set aside and you could rerun a week from 2007, for example, if it has to come to a rerun.

Why is this so hard to understand?

Jul-13-20  jith1207: Good one, <agb2002>
Jul-13-20  jith1207: But, as I understand, there are probably placeholders for POTD for Monday, Tuesday, so on... Until Sunday. At any time, these placeholders keep the last week version, and if the person who usually updates every week isn't available to update these placeholders, the previous week puzzles get repeated until someone acts on it.

This is why I think the same puzzles for each day got repeated for 2 weeks or more in Daniel Freeman's immediate absence and until the successors learned what's where.

So I hope whatever emergency the person in charge faces is resolved in a favorable manner soon.

Jul-13-20  belgradegambit: <jith1207> makes an important point. This isn’t a business like chess24 or chess.com. It’s basically a volunteer organization that is going to have its hiccups.
