Nov-09-13  Everett: Whites position stinks, but is there a clear way in for Black?
Nov-10-13  Edmontonchessclub: Flag?
Nov-10-13  Jigsaw42: No, Mamedyarov had more than 10 minutes on his clock. Really weird decision.
Nov-10-13  badest: Maybe the team had already won, and he didn't care much. Still weird though ... far from won game.
Nov-10-13  parisattack: Perhaps <MamedyarovFan> can enlighten us here. Shak has been know to fold early in a game when he's not happy with his play...
Nov-10-13  JustAnotherPatzer: Uh? Unpleasant but not indefensible
Nov-11-13  nolanryan: I think it is as she says: you work hard you play hard.
Nov-12-13  onigorom: This is clearly lost. White has no meaningful moves and cannot prevent 33...Kf5, 34...Kg4 and then 35...g5, after which 36.hxg5 h4 and game over. White cannot exchange queens since he will loose b2. Absolutely hopeless.
Nov-13-13  hedgeh0g: Black is threatening to infiltrate with his king, the white queen is tied down to the defence of f2 and b2 and a queen trade will simply allow the black king to march in and wreak havoc after the rook is forced to b1.
Nov-17-13  ed rs: why no 24 or 25 Qxc4?
Nov-17-13  ed rs: ok, got it, sorry
Nov-23-13  pericles of athens: Fritz evaluates 33. Qc2 (best move) as -0.78.

keypusher: The position after 23.Qc3 is set as an exercise in Jacob Aagaard's <Thinking Inside the Box>

23....Bc4!! ("Black would love to exploit the weakness of the light squares on the kingside, but the bishop is not really doing any damage over there. For this reason Topalov switched it to the other diagonal.")

24.Bxc4 bxc4 (threatening ...Qh3, so White has no time to capture the pawn) 25.Kg2 Rcb8! 26.Ra1 (now 26.Qxc4 Ra4 loses a piece) Rxa1 27.Rxa1 Nd5! (White has to capture, giving Black a dominant pawn structure).

I think I could analyze the position at move 23 forever and Topalov's ...Bc4 would never cross my mind.

Incidentally, SF scores the final position at -3.60 at 47 ply. But it takes a long time for Black to make progress. Mamedyarov really should have kept playing.

Here's SF's main line for anyone who is curious.
