Penguincw: Well, a pawn is hanging on b7, so let's grab it!

The only move I considered was 15.Nxe6, which was played.

Nov-28-15  Marmot PFL: After 15 Ne6 fe6 16 Ne4 white has threats to both the knight and queen. 16...Qd4 17 Bg5 and now Rc1 is threatened and 17...Qxb2 fails to 18 Rb1
Nov-28-15  rickycota: I really don't get it. All moves seem natural to me, normal continuation. Great game but not puzzle material in my opinion.
Nov-28-15  kubbybulin: Im with Penguin. Qb7 all the way!! Easy peasy. Next.
Nov-28-15  kubbybulin: First I tried 15. Ne6 fe6 16. Be3 Ne3 17. Qe6 Kf8 18. Qe3 Qe3 19. fe3 which wins a pawn but leaves white with a dubious position. Equal at best. Tried a few other follow ups to 15. Ne6 fe6 including 16. Nce4 but hallucinated that the c4 knight was protected by the e6 bishop so the black queen was free to step away from its defense. Lackluster effort. Zero points. I'm glad it is not possible to lose points in my system. Will bring my A-game tomorrow. I am with Ricky though... I was hoping for a pretty sacrifice.
Nov-28-15  morfishine: I agree with <rickycota>, perhaps a little more disappointed
Nov-28-15  ferri1234: Really strange kind of puzzle
Nov-28-15  agb2002: The material is identical.

The first idea that comes to mind is 15.Nxe6 fxe6 16.Ne4 Qd4 (16... Qc6(d5) 17.Nf6+ Bxf6 18.Bxc6(d5) wins)

A) 17.Be3 Nxe3 18.Qxe6+

A.1) 18... Kh8 19.Ng5

A.1.a) 19... Qc4(f6) 20.Nf7+ Kg8 21.Nxd8+ wins decisive material.

A.1.b) 19... Rf8 20.fxe3 Qf6 [P], unclear.

A.2) 18... Kf8 19.Ng5

A.2.a) 19... Qf6 20.Nxh7+ Ke8 21.Nxf6+ wins.

A.2.b) 19... Qc4 20.Qxe3 with an extra pawn and a number of threats (Ne6, Nxh7+, Rc1, Bxb7, etc.).

B) 17.Bg5

B.1) 17... Bf6 18.Bxf6 Qxf6 19.Qxc4 wins a piece.

B.2) 17... Rd7 18.e3

B.2.a) 18... Qd3 19.Qxd3 Rxd3 20.Bxe7 wins a piece.

B.2.b) 18... Nd2 19.exd4 Nxb3 20.axb3 wins a piece.

B.3) 17... Re8 18.e3 as B.2.

B.4) 17... Kf8 18.Rc1 looks very good for White. For example, 18... Na5 19.Qf3+ Ke8 20.Rxc7 Nac6 21.Rxb7 wins two pawns.

-----

I think 17.Bg5 is much stronger than 17.Be3.

Nov-28-15  dnp: actually I got the first 4 moves, which is unusual for me on Sat puzzles. Not as difficult as I was expecting. Well, only 26 days until Christmas.
Nov-28-15  diagonalley: 15NxB is almost a given... but what then(?) ... i went for 16.B-K3 which seemed plausible enough...
Nov-28-15  Cheapo by the Dozen: Over the board I'd have played Nxe6 and then grabbed the b-pawn.
Nov-28-15  wooden nickel: I missed 17.Bg5! in the text line; I tried the weaker variation 15.Nce4 ... if Qa5 then 16.Nxe6 Qe1+ 17.Kh2 Rd1 18.h4 Qg1+ 19.Kh3 Rxc1 20.Rxc1 Qxc1 and wasn't sure which move to make from there:

Nov-28-15  Takya Kotov: It doesn't really seem like a puzzle to me because there were too many ways the game could go. It is just really well played by Ju Wenjun.
Nov-28-15  Pinkerton: 26.Be3 is the difficult move for me. I don't have that much of a control. I would have pushed the b pawn. Ugh! Tactics to the end!
Nov-28-15  Pinkerton: I thought 26.b3 would do it but now i see 26...Bg3 27.fg Qc5+ and Black is fine.
Nov-28-15  Imran Iskandar: This was weird for a puzzle, but the 'combination', nevertheless, was sheer positional mastery.
Nov-28-15  dfcx: Too complicated. Although the first 2 moves are easy to see, the rest are not so clear. After 4 moves white gains a pawn and some positional advantages.
Nov-28-15  Marmot PFL: Wasn't tempted by the b-pawn as Bxb7 Rb8 is awkward and Qxb7 Bxc3 bc3 Rd1+ is also messy.

Jimfromprovidence: The alternative 22 Qa4, with the threat of Qd7 seeing Rf4, seems very strong.

Nov-28-15  PJs Studio: 26.Be3!! Those middle game Zugzwangish middlegame moves are just gorgeous!!

I missed 26.Be3 And 27.Bf4! Excellent play by Wenjun

Nov-28-15  JASAHA: I agree; just a game continuation, not a puzzle. Get with the program!
Nov-28-15  mikrohaus: <rickycota> was the first to say it: this is not a combo. It's a maneuver all of us would do in a real game.

That doesn't make it bad for the likes of us; but, we are trying to teach yunguns too. They expect combos in "White/Black to move."

It's better for them w/ this position & "Guess the Move", in my opinion.

Nov-28-15  PJs Studio: Puzzle not a puzzle...pshhhh! Who cares! Learn something from a strong master!
