  Penguincw: It's December 24th, or Christmas eve! Last day to finish Christmas shopping. Where I'm from, most stores and malls will be closed by 6.

Happy Christmas and Merry New Year!

Regarding this puzzle. My first thought was 29...Nf3+, but I eventually decided on 29...Ne2+ 30.Qxe2 Qg5+ 31.Ng3, but wasn't sure how to make progress from there. Of course, 30.Qxe2, 30...Qxe2, and it's all over for white.

< ♕ sac: 30...Qe5+ >

Not sure if I would really define it as a queen sac, since black checkmates immediately, with a sideway, hybrid spinoff version (or whatever) of Anastasia mate.

Dec-24-15  nalinw: I saw the mate after

29. ... Ne2+
30. Kh2 Qxe3
31. fxe3 Rf2#

but didn't see what happens after

30. Kg2

I must be missing something obvious because White didn't do that!

Dec-24-15  nalinw: Oh dear - my solution doesn't work because of

31. Nxe3 - covering the mate

Dec-24-15  dfcx: After struggling yesterday, I have figured today's puzzle out.

29.Ne2+

A. 30.Qxe2 Qxe2

B. 30.Kg2 Nf4+
B1. 31.Kh2 Rxh2+
B2. 31.Kg3 Qg5+ 32. Kf3 Qg2#
B3. 31.Kf3 Nxd5+ wins queen.
B4. 31.Kg1 Qg5+ 32. Ng3 Nxh3+ 33.Rxh3 Qxe3 34.fxe3 Rxh3 black is up an exchange.

C. 30.Kh2 Qxe3 31.Nxe3 (fixed? Rf2#) Rxf2+ 32.Ng2 Nf4 wins

  al wazir: After 30. Kh2, the win is easy. My line was 30...Qxe3 31. Nxe3 Rxf2+ 32. Ng2 Nf4, with 33. Rg1 Rxh3# or 33. Kg1 Rxg2+, with 34...Rxd2 to follow. Not as good as the game line, but clearly winning.

After 30. Kg2, however, I didn't see anything better than 30...Nf4+ 31. Kg1 (31. Kh2 Rxh3+) Qg5+ 32. Ng3 (32. Kh2 Qg2#; 32. Qg3 Ne2+) Nxh3+ 33. Rxh3 (33. Kf1 Qxe3; 33. Kh2 Nxf2+; 33. Kg2 Qxe3 34. fxe3 Rf2#) Qxe3 34. fxe3 Rxh3. Black is up an exchange with a strong position, but that's not as convincing as I'd like.

Dec-24-15  dfcx: I see now after 30.Kh2 Qe5+ wins faster than Qxe3.

<nalinw: ...

30.Kg2 is a better defense, white would be down only a piece.

  al wazir: Oops. I missed something. After 30. Kh2 Qxe3 31. Nxe3 Rxf2+ 32. Ng2 Nf4, 33. Kg3 is a killer.
Dec-24-15  dfcx: <al wazir: Oops. I missed something. After 30. Kh2 Qxe3 31. Nxe3 Rxf2+ 32. Ng2 Nf4, 33. Kg3 is a killer.>

33...Rxg2+ 34.Kxh4?? g5#

Dec-24-15  dfcx: After
30.Kh2 Qe5+

The correct defense is 30.Kg2

I just ran Stockfish and 30...Qxe3 (-9.91) is slightly better than 30...Qe5+ (-8.02).

  al wazir: <dfcx: 33...Rxg2+ 34.Kxh4?? g5#> Beautiful!! I wish I'd seen that.

Thank you for saving my line.

Dec-24-15  kubbybulin: So what after 30...Qe5 31. Kg2?
Dec-24-15  kubbybulin: I see 31...Qa1 is that it. Looks winning.
Dec-24-15  patzer2: For today's Thursday solution I got as far as 29...Ne2+ 30. Kg2 (30. Kh2 Qxe3+ ) 30...Nf4+ 31. Kg1 Qg5+ but didn't see my way through to a clear win in all variations.

Running it through the computer, Deep Fritz 14 gives the following winning lines:

<29...Ng2+ 30. Kh2>

30. Kg2 Nf4+ 31. Kf3

(a) 31. Kg1 Qg5+ 32. Ng3 Rxh3 (32... Nxh3+ 33. Kg2

[33. Rxh3 Qxe3 34. fxe3 Rxh3 35. Kg2 Rh7 ( -2.21 @ 23 depth) 33... Qxe3 34. fxe3 Rf2#;

33. Rxh3 Nxh3+ 34. Kg2 (34. Kh2 Rxf2+ 35. Qxf2 Nxf2 -13.98 @ 21 depth) 34... Rxf2+ 35. Qxf2 Nxf2 36. Rf1 Qxd2 37. Rxf2 Qd4 (-8.17 @ 20 depth)]

33. Re1 Rxh1+ 34. Kxh1 Qh4+ 35. Kg1 Nh3+ 36. Kh1 b5 37. Qe6+ Kd8 38. Nf3 Qh7 39. Nd4 Nf4+ 40. Kg1 Nxe6 41. Nxe6+ Ke8 42. cxb5 Bxb5 43. Ng5+ Qe7 44. Rxe7 Kxe7 45. Ne6 Rh8 (-3.37 @ 23 depth)

(b) 31. Kh2 Rxh3+ 32. Qxh3+ Nxh3 33. Kxh3 Qg5 34. Ng3 Qxd2 (-10.46 @ 20 depth)

(c) 31. Kg3 Qg5+ 32. Kf3 Qg2#

31... Nxd5+ 32. Ke2 Nxe3 33. Nxe3 d5 34. Rac1 d4 35. Rce1 dxe3 (-17. 13 @20 depth)

<30... Qe5+>

Also winning is 30... Qxe3 31. Nxe3 Rxf2+ 32. Ng2 Nf4 33. Kg3 Rxg2+ 34. Kxh4 (34. Kf3 Rxd2 35. Kg3 g5 -12.93 @ 20 depth) 34... g5#

<31. Qxe5 Rxf2#>

30...Kg2 31. Nf4+ 32. Kf3 Qh5+ 33. Ke4 Re8+ 34. Kd4 Qh8+ 35. Qe5 Qxe5#

For an improvement for White, instead of 14. Bb2 (allowing 14...h4! = to -0.24 @ 21 depth), I like the Deep Fritz 14 suggestion 14. Nbc3 when play might continue 14...h4 15. Qd3 hxg3+ 16. fxg3 Ng4+ 17. Kg1 Nf6 18. b4 = (+0.17 @ 20 depth).

White's game begins a percipitous decline after 15. exf5? hxg3 (-1.21 @ 21 depth). Instead, 15. Kg1 = (-0.22 @ 22 depth) keeps it about level.

P.S.: The 30. Kg2 Nf4+ 31. Kg1 Rxh3 32. Ng3 Rxh3 33. Re1 Rxh1+ 34. Kxh1 Qh4+ 35. Kg1 Nh3+ 36. Kh1 b5 37. Qe6+ Kd8 38. Nf3 Qh7 39. Nd4 Nf4+ 40. Kg1 Nxe6 41. Nxe6+ Ke8 42. cxb5 Bxb5 43. Ng5+ Qe7 44. Rxe7 Kxe7 45. Ne6 Rh8 (-3.37 @ 23 depth) variation is the Deep Fritz 14 main line.

Dec-24-15  patzer2: <kubbybulin: So what after 30...Qe5 31. Kg2?> 31...Nf4+ 32. Kg1 Qxa8 (-9.04 @ 23 depth, Deep Fritz 14).
Dec-24-15  morfishine: The first move is <29...Ne2+> Pattern recognition reveals a thematic formation identical to the "Anastasia" mate where the White King is boxed in since both <g3> & <g1> are controlled by the terrible Black Knight; Once one sees that, things become simpler: 30.Kh2 (30.Kg2 also loses due to 30...Nf4+ followed by 31...Qg5) 30...Qe5+ and now White can either fall into the Kg2 line or throw in the towel with 31.Qxe5, which he does, allowing <31...Rxf2#>

Nice

Dec-24-15  stacase: <nalinw: ...

but didn't see what happens after

30. Kg2>

And I should have seen it, but I got hasty after spending a lot of time figuring out 29....Ne2+ but I did see the mate after the "Quuen sac"

Dec-24-15  gofer: I went for...

<29 ... Ne2+>
<30 Kg2 Nf4+>
<31 Kg1 Qg5+>
<32 Ng3 Nxh3+>
<33 Rxh3 Qxe3>
<34 fxe3 Rxh3>
<35 Kg2 Rh7>

At which point we have won a pawn and an exchange, to end an exchange up. A possible alternative is <35 ... Rh2+ 36 Kxh2 Rf2+ 37 Kh4 Rxd2> giving back the exchange, but creating lots of pawn weaknesses for white to protect. But, I don't think this is worth losing the exchange, so I have ignored it...

~~~
<30 Kh2> is simply making black's job 10 times easier - why do it?!?!?
Dec-24-15  agb2002: Black has a bishop for a knight and a pawn.
White threatens 30.Qxe7.
Black can try to bring the knight to f4 with tempo, to incorporate the queen into atack more directly, with 29... Ne2+:
A) 30.Kg2 Nf4+
A.1) 31.Kg1 Qg5+ 32.Ng3 (32.Qg3 Ne2+ wins the queen; 32.Kh2 Qg2#) 32... Nxh3+
A.1.a) 33.Rxh3 Qxe3 34.fxe3 Rxh3 - + [R+B vs 2N].
A.1.b) 33.Kf1 Rxf2+ 34.Qxf2 (34.Ke1 Qxe3+ 35.Kd1 Qxd2#) 34... Nxf2 35.Rxh4 (35.Kxf2 Qxd2+ wins even more material) 35... Qxh4 - + [Q+B vs R+2N].
A.1.c) 33.Kg2 Rxf2+ is similar to A.1.b.
A.1.d) 33.Kh2 Rxf2+ 34.Qxf2 Nxf2+ is a massacre.
A.2) 31.Kg3 Qg5+ 32.Kh2 Qg2#.
A.3) 31.Kh2 Rxh3+ 32.Qxh3 Nxh3 33.Kxh3 b6 - + [Q+B vs R+2N].
B) 30.Kh2 Qxe3 31.Nxe3 (31.fxe3 Rf2#) 31... Rxf2+ 32.Ng2 Nf4 33.Kg3 (33.Ra(h)g1 Rxh3#) 33... Rxg2+ 34.Kf3 (33.Kxh4 g5#) 34... Rxd2 - + [B+N].
Dec-24-15  Tiggler: I saw the mating sequence, but was surprised that white allowed it with 34. Qxe5. I assumed white would try 34. Ng3, but after exchanging Qs the black rook still mates on f2.
Dec-24-15  stst: Now lost the diagram due to net problems.
Thought the point is to let N buttress @e2, controlling g1, g3. Then f4 got to be blocked White Q's access to g5, allowing Qg5.
So check if this works:
29................Ne2+
(if QxN, QxQ and White exchanges down)
(if Kh2, then QxQ, f1/f2xQ but Rf2#)
30.Kg2 (option left) Rhf4 (per plan, not Nf4+ then g1/g3 let loose.) 31.f3 (if Ndf3, RxN harassing Q, if QxQ, again Rxf2#) Qg5+ 32.Nfg3 (Kh2 - same story Rxf2#) QxN#
.....could miss something as played blind. Time to check truth....
Dec-24-15  stst: With the toy set, have to compare
(A)30..........Rhf4
(B)30----------Nf4+
Dec-24-15  Sniffles: A 1/2 star poozle. Cute but so is my cat when going potty.
Dec-24-15  frogbert: My solution was this:
29... Ne2+
I rather quickly dismissed 30. Kh2 due to 30... Qxe3 31. Nxe3 (fxe3 Rxf2 mate) Rxf2+ 32. Ng2 Nf4 33. Kg3 (either rook to g1 and there is 33... Rxh3 mate) 33... Rxg2+ 34. Kf3 (34. Kxh4 g5 mate) Rxd2 and it's over.
On 30. Kg2 I very much liked
30... Rhf4!? (leaving the queen on e7 en prise, threatening Qxe3 followed by Rxf2 mate) thinking that white didn't have better than 31. Nf3? to avoid it. Then I realized that white has 31. f3 - and I looked at the position after 31... Qg5+ 32. Kf2. The funny thing is that after 32... Nd4! white is completely tied up, unable to free himself. So even a pawn up there, I think white is strategically lost.
I was surprised to see the quick finish in the game, since 30. Kh2 was so clearly losing - even if I didn't spot Qe5+. But seeing one clear win is usually enough. :)
