Aug-27-14  Ulhumbrus: 14...d5 comes with tempo but eg 15 Qf4 also gains a tempo by threatening Qh6. If Black can neither recover the piece nor gain sufficient compensation for it he is lost.
Aug-27-14  boz: <14...d5 comes with tempo but eg 15 Qf4 also gains a tempo by threatening Qh6. If Black can neither recover the piece nor gain sufficient compensation for it he is lost.>

But if the white queen goes to h6, the pawn on f6 can be taken by the black queen.

Aug-27-14  Marmot PFL: Qh6 only a threat if f6 is defended.

Sneaky: And by the way, 13...Nb4 is positively incredible. I don't know what the computers say, but from a practical point of view I think it's clear now that Black is better. Every single one of Black's pieces is well deployed, even the rook on a8 and the bishop on c8, neither of which have moved.

Check It Out: Carlsen can take the bishop on c4. the white queen can't go immediately to h6 because it has to defend the f6 pawn.
Aug-27-14  Ulhumbrus: <Penguincw: Is it me, or is the live broadcast on chess24.com breaking down?> Perhaps the live broadcast is popular enough to get overloaded. Here is one suggestion: try opening its website page on another TAB instead of in another window.
Aug-27-14  nite: Livestream.com had problems during last year's cup. They switched to local FoxSports to stream later rounds. It's shocking they're using livestream.com again.
Aug-27-14  Marmot PFL: Don't really follow this line, but I take it 7...a5 is a fairly recent innovation?
Aug-27-14  Ulhumbrus: <truefriends: < Ulhumbrus: 14...d5 comes with tempo but eg 15 Qf4 also gains a tempo by threatening Qh6.> Doesn't black just have Qxf6 after Qh6? ;-)
So it doesn't gain a tempo... 15.Qf4 dxc4 16.Qh6 Qxf6 and white is lost>
Yes indeed. Because of ...Qxf6 it does not in fact gain a tempo. White cannot then keep his piece in this way.
Aug-27-14  ajile: Wow this is great! A live chess broadcast that isn't happening at 4AM in the morning.

offramp: I am so pleased the Scotch has been played. Kasparov showed it's a good way of avoiding the Spanish.

AylerKupp: <Sneaky> In the official site Stockfish was indicating at low ply that 13...Nb4 was best, in the order of [-0.35] or so, very soon after Carlsen went into its deep think. So I don't know why it seemed to come as a surprise to the commentators. But credit to Carlsen for finding it OTB.
Aug-27-14  Ulhumbrus: After 15...dxc4 suppose that White delays Qh6 by 16 Rd1 so as to hinder ..Qxf6 in reply to Qh6 eg 16...Bd7 17 Rxd7 Qxd7 18 Qh6

Sneaky: To all those people who poo-pooed the idea of playing the Scotch against GM Naiditsch: doesn't this look more fun than that dry Ruy?

Aug-27-14  ajile: If your king is still in the center after 15 moves against Carlsen maybe you deserve punishment.

Probably.

I always open pages in new tabs.

offramp: A friend of mine said he could communicate with house flies but I poo-pooed the idea.
Aug-27-14  zanzibar: One difference between 15.Qf4 vs 15.Qg5 is that on g5 the Q support d5, allowing Black to be punished if he goes for a pawn grab:

15.Qg5 dxc4 16.Nd5 Rxa2 17.O-O Bxe3 18.fxe3 Kh8 19.Qh6 Rg8 20.Rxa2 bxa2 21.Ne7

And now the dsq weakness is exploited.

White has the less dangerous side of the board to handle.

Aug-27-14  Ulhumbrus: The broadcast keeps breaking up like a faulty DVD

This is a lot sharper than most Scotchs and I don't agree that the Ruy in the Naiditsch is "dry".

Aug-27-14  Marmot PFL: thought Scotland was free in 1314 (700 years ago)

You are right, it's more like an exceptional drought.
