Oct-15-14  Pulo y Gata: Is this a record? 157 moves! Talk about fighting spirit!

Penguincw: Wow. The white king went to the right coloured corner, and still lost.

BTW: According to the <cg> database, this is the 2nd longest game played at a World Junior Championship (A Nukin vs I Enchev, 2008 lasted 163 moves).

Oct-15-14  Pulo y Gata: 32.Rc5 looks like an inaccuracy. Instead Bxa4 32...Rxb4 33.b3 Rd4 34.d7 retains the pressure although a draw is likely.

Oct-15-14  SugarDom: Isn't rook vs bishop a table-base draw?
Oct-17-14  Pulo y Gata: You're correct, Sugardom.

Penguincw: Correction to my above post: this is now the <3rd> longest game at a World Junior Championship, as 3 days later, P Supreetha vs P V Nandhidhaa, 2014 lasted 158 moves. It was a World Junior Championship for <girls> only, but it still counts for me. :)

An Englishman: Good Evening: Working back from the end, one place to look for a fatal error might consist of 155.Be6, which was fine a few moves before because it attacked the Rd7. After 155...Kg6, White could prolong the game with 156.Kf8,Rg7; 157.Bf5+,Kf6, but Black has pried the White King out of the good corner. On the other hand, Black might not force mate within the move limit, whatever it is nowadays.
Apr-25-20  goodevans: <An Englishman> You're right about <155.Be6> being the losing move but if <156.Kf8> then simply <156...Kf6> wins the B.

There's a general point here. If the R on the 7th has the opposing K trapped on the 8th then the B should stay clear of the 6th because that's where the attacking K can threaten mate. On move 155 white could have moved his B to any other unattacked square and been fine or he could have just left it where it was.

I guess young Tari found that out the hard way. It must be sickening to lose such a long game through one careless mistake. Still, three years later he was back and actually won the title.

Apr-25-20  thegoodanarchist: Can someone please explain the pun?

WannaBe: I believe it's based on "Shop until you drop", but in this case, it's the Bishop.
Apr-25-20  Brenin: <thegoodanarchist>, <WannaBe>: It could also be "Bop Till You Drop", a Ry Cooder album.

Breunor: I guess it is oddly satisfying that even GMs make blunders and lose a ‘book’ drawn game like this. I think many of us lose these types of ‘drawn’ positions.
Apr-25-20  RandomVisitor: After 9...0-0 there is 10.Qd3

Thanks. So the pun makes sense if you mispronounce "Bishop", which is correctly pronounced "BISH up"
