Nov-01-14 | | Strongest Force: Gelf is playing a solid game against the 'born again' Andreikin. |
Nov-01-14
 | | perfidious: <kingscrusher> Used to play against the Slav a lot, though 4....a6 did not exist in those days. One of the points of the main line 4....dxc4 5.a4 Bf5 is that Black is able to freely develop a piece which is rather a liability in other QGD lines, while also augmenting a grip on the central light squares. |
Nov-01-14
 | | keypusher: Looks quite drawn. |
Nov-01-14 | | Strongest Force: I hope Gelf can do something with this pawn, for Naka's sake. |
Nov-01-14 | | whiteshark: All rook endings are drawn, but some more than others. |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: It's not impossible to find a way to lose |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: If I had to play this game and could choose the color, I'd take WShite here. |
Nov-01-14
 | | Penguincw: I'm just looking at this position and wondering, could Gelfand win if he exchanges the a5 pawn for d4, and then keeps his rook on a2? |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: Right now, it doesn't seem clear on exazctly how Gelfand can win this, but there's no doubt, his position is far more playable and offers him a larger variety of schemes, but will any of them work? |
Nov-01-14
 | | Penguincw: Mamedyarov-MVL recently drawn in 56 moves. Meanwhile, the only other game going on at the moment is Giri-Jobava. In a rook, bishop and pawn endgame, Giri is up a pawn, and has the same coloured bishop, but that extra pawn is an isolated doubled pawn. |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: Ok dudes, let's look at some obviously possibilities: First, what can Black do? His R is actually fixed on the sixth rank! It would not be wise for it to leave that rank and anywhere else seems bad so this leaves him only the K and/or the h-pawn...anyone else? |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: Black has just played 45...Rd6. It seems natural for White to play 46. Rd2 here |
Nov-01-14
 | | Penguincw: White takes the a-pawn, but black has a fast moving majority on the kingside. Anything can still happen, although I prefer white. |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: White should come out a pawn-plus, but I doubt it will be enuff to win |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: Black has just played 1...g4. Now 2. Rd3 and White maintains his extra pawn |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: 1. Kb5!! Friends, this is where GM's are better than Experts! |
Nov-01-14
 | | Penguincw: If d5 and h3 are exchanged, and white gets his rook behind the passed pawn, looks like a good chance to win. However, it is a rook pawn, so it's not so sure. However, many games have been decided due to time pressure, and Andreikin, the defending side, has about 1 minute/move. |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: Penguinov: Thanks for reminding me about the time...Yes! time will play a huge role in this game! |
Nov-01-14
 | | Penguincw: Really? This game is drawn. I think Gelfand should've pushed until time controls. Who knows? Andreikin could blunder. Anyway, the only game left is Giri-Jobava, but that looks like it'll be drawn as well. |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: Yes, I thought Gelfand would have used the clock a bit more, but when you look at the final position, these guys could have moved quite quickly :) |
Nov-01-14 | | chessdgc2: chessgames.com: THANK YOU!!! SEE YOU TOMORROW |
Nov-01-14
 | | ketchuplover: Looks like a win for white |
Nov-01-14
 | | keypusher: Well it was less drawn than I thought! But Andrekin held on. |
Nov-01-14 | | SirRuthless: Yes I was impressed with his defensive technique. He pushed his pawns at the right moment to generate enough counter-play to hold the draw. Very impressive from the tournament leader. |

"Gato Boca Arriba" (Spanish)
Fight without Mercy
Again we have a tense psycological sport struggle, tailender vs leader. Boris has more space, Andreikin´s position is cramped. The position is unbalanced, any mistake should have fatal consequences. By move 11. ... Aa6 the position is already =; and by move 20 the queens, a couple rooks, and a couple minor pieces have been exchanged.
The position is = and the kings will start walking towards the center. It looks like it is going to be a draw...but Gelfand has a passed pawn after more simplifications, giving him a slight edge, not enough to win. Dmitry Andreikin unveils his endgame technique in this unbalanced position for the draw.
