MissScarlett: Oh mate, you're 18, you've beaten Lasker and Capablanca you're at university, your whole life ahead of you. What the @#$% went wrong?

Nb, other databases have Black as <E T Whitaker>, but it's definitely Norm.

offramp: Perhaps Norm was too clever for his own good. Listen to that Dragnet Episode I keep going on about and you'll hear DC Friday's monologue about the go-hick of conmen.

naresb: 48. Qh6 was better option for White, could have extended the game.
Jun-10-15  TheFocus: From a simultaneous exhibition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 2, 1909.

Capablanca scored +16=4-2.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Whitaker had so many gifts and advantages, but threw them all away. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norma... has a decent introduction.

offramp: <HeMateMe: Do you get Dragnet reruns in England?> No, Dragnet is never shown on telly.

You can hear the radio version of the Dragnet at places like archive.org and YouTube.

You'll see me prattling on about <The Big Grifter>, the show featuring a few of Whitaker's cons at Norman Tweed Whitaker (kibitz #48).

HeMateMe: seems like Whitaker could be the subject for a fun movie. I nominate Woody Harrelson to play Whitaker late in life. WH is the go-to-guy when you need an old, crazy person in the movie. He just is. Musician Ed Sherhan plays the young Whitaker.
Jul-12-23  goodevans: Capa had a nice advantage coming out of the opening. It started to slip with 27.bxa5 Rf5 28.Re7 when 27.Re7 and 28.bxa5 in the other order would have given Black less counterplay.

I wonder how many boards were still playing towards the end when Capa got so sloppy. I couldn't believe that he let his N get trapped like that. Maybe he was intending 51.Qxa6 which might have been interesting.

52.h4?? was careless beyond belief.

I initially thought that 27.Re7 Rg8 28.bxa5 Bc6 29.Nf4 (If now 29...Qxe7, then 30.Ng6+ hxg6 31.Qh3+ and mate next.) would lose to 29...g5. But White has 30.Rxh7+ Kxh7 31.Qh3+ Kg7 32.Ne6+ followed by 33.Nxd8, winning.

This doesn't seem that easy to find when giving a simul, even for Capablanca!
