  HeMateMe: 30. Nxe6!

I guess black has so many holes in his position, it's time to resign. Still, you'd think he'd try to get his queen into white's position and go for a perpetual. It wouldn't hurt to play on for a few more moves.

Jan-09-23  ndg2: For once the pun is halfway smart: obviously the "Top" refers to our good ol' Veselin, but "Nadir" means "point direcly below one's location" (the pun's "bottom")
Jan-09-23  Brenin: Nice pun! At the end, White plays Qe3, Nd7 and Nf6, with a completely dominant position.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Simple yet elegant pun for an above-average game. Nice find, whomever found it.

The computer calls it equal, but White's position after 15.f3 looked horrible to this carbon-based life form. Topalov did a great job of finding offensive possibilities here.

OhioChessFan: The pun is an excellent bit of wordplay.

piltdown man: Great pun for a fabulous game. What a player Topalov was in his prime!

ChessCoachClark: In reality, the pun is off by quite a bit. Nadir actually means rare, precious and special. As with Polish, German, Spanish and other surnames that have been "disqualified" by Kibitzers, e.g., errors with "Euwe"-- putting a name exclusively in English can be faulty. Nadir is an Arabic name that connotes a high quality, not secondary in any sense.

OhioChessFan: <CCC> I bet you're a lot of fun at parties.
Jan-09-23  Brenin: <CCC>: The Oxford English Dictionary gives "the lowest point (of anything)" as one of three meanings for "nadir". The other two are variations on "opposite point".

MissScarlett: It's the Oxford Arabic dictionary you need to consult.

My own view is that inflicting violence in the cause of wordplay is a feature, not a bug.

Jan-09-23  goodevans: You know those dinner parties where one guest constantly interrupts and everyone else is just thinking "just wait until you've got something interesting to say"...

There are SF annotations to 38 moves in this game (> 62%) which would suggest a really poor game (it's quite the opposite). Maybe half a dozen would have sufficed.

You mean you're not happy to learn that the Queen's Gambit and the Slav are trash?

Jan-09-23  outplayer: I like this game very much. Topalov has taught me how to deal with this variation transposing into a Dutch defence.
