Dec-28-16  tuttifrutty: This is what a world champion is made out of....minced meat....sweet.
Dec-28-16  Sokrates: ... and this is the way, my friends, a world champion commits suicide. Hard to believe that the champ has played this. His miserable 17th and 18th moves were pure coffee-house style - but with no coffee at the end. This game cost him the rapid WC.
Dec-28-16  beenthere240: Even before move 17 his game looks poor. He forgot to castle. I love the way that Korobov never bothered to take the h1 Rook.

Carlsen's 17th is not too bad if followed here...

....with the root idea 18.Qh3. The 18.Ng5 move threatens 19. Rh8+ etc. Did Carlsen miss 18...Bxg2 which cover h3. What other explanation?

Black cannot take on the h1 Rook right away (19...Bxh1?) as that would lose to Rxh1 and when Black can safely take it a few moves later Rfc8 giving the Black King running room is better.

All in all a pretty easy game for Korobov. The 'attack' may have worked in the blitz tournament not anywhere else.

This is what I like about Carlsen, every now and then he throws out one of these. I can play and lose like that!

Dec-28-16  ChessHigherCat: I don't see what's so bad about 17. Qd7 either. Black obviously was going to play Rd8 to attack the Q and prevent queen-side castling, and Qd7 was the only square on the d file where white could go to prevent the immediate Rd8 (because of Qxb), and from there the queen can fall back to h3 with mating threats, maintaining the initiative. What should he have played instead on move 17?
Dec-29-16  InjustBeast: Seems like 17.bxa7,Rxa7 18.O-O or Qe2 would have been a perfectly fine continuation for Magnus.

What if 17.bxa7, R(f)d8?

Oct-30-20  Justin796: Yeah but for every game like this, he is still Magnus Carlsen, which can be problematic for a lot of players!
Feb-21-22  Messiah: Ayy! :-)

WASTED.
