Jun-20-22 | | Brenin: A second POTD today, equally easy! 18 ... Rh4+ 19 Bxh4 (19 Kg1 Rh1 mate) Qh3+ 20 Kg1 Qg2 (or Qh1) mate. |
Jun-20-22 | | Brenin: A fine attack by our old friend <Phony Benoni>, gratefully accepting White's invitation (8 Bg5, 9 Bh4) to advance his g-pawn, and taking full advantage of White's Q going on holiday at a4 (14 b4 Bb6 15 e5 was needed). But why 17 ... Rxg4, when 17 ... Qxg4 was a much quicker win (18 Bxc6+ Kf8)? |

Jun-20-22 | | goodevans: Nice win <PB>. Do you know why your 8th round game from this US Open is missing from your games list? Do you have a copy of the game score? I see you were keen on short games back then. Over half of the recorded games from the first ten rounds were 'miniatures' and the average for the 9 games was just over 24 moves. Ursula Foster then made you work a bit harder for the win in the last round. |

Jun-20-22 | | thegoodanarchist: Tough to decide between 20...Qg2# and 20...Qh1# Both lines are equally promising. |
Jun-20-22 | | TheaN: <18....Rg4+ 19.Bxh4 (Kg1 Rh1#) Qh3+ 20.Kg1 Qg2#> is definitely Monday material. White got Göring Phony'd in this one. I don't play the gambit often, I prefer more classical lines or the direct gambit in the Scotch, but the d3 line has always been a bit of a sting. Psychologically speaking it's the optimal way to counter a gambit: White wants piece play and doesn't care for material, Black gives back material and stumps pieces. Though White's fine, but he's not getting the position he wanted: Nb1 is blocked and the light squared bishop isn't on the square he wants to be. As per <Brenin>, White's first real mistake was 9.Bh4, where Black can safely play the text. Black erred slightly with 12....Nh5 (though not a bad move) as 13.Bh4 Qd7 seems to equalize. Immediately after though, White throws the game with 14.Qa4? after most normal moves give Black a huge advantage; 14....Rg8 (-3), and simply Bxf3 (-4). |

Jun-20-22 | | eblunt: Black is already ♘ + ♙ down, no counterplay and defence in tatters. Hard not to win from there. 18 ... ♖x♗ works equally well. |
Jun-20-22 | | jrredfield: I chose 18...Rxg3, also a mate in 3.
18...Rxg3 19.Kxg3 Qg4 20.Kh2 Qg2# |

Jun-20-22 | | henilsson: Chrisowen: still drunk after the weekend? |
Jun-20-22 | | Z free or die: Still at it <henilsson>? Making much progress? Nah? I didn't think so. |

 | | gawain: Finding a mating finish here is Easier Than Very Easy. It practically plays itself. Still, it's fun that there are different ways. |
Jun-20-22 | | goodevans: <chrisowen> has been on my (very short) ignore list for years but I wouldn't wish him any ill. I thank <henilsson> for his regular reminders that co is still alive and cricking. |
Jun-20-22 | | Brenin: There is a nice mate in 4, starting with 18 ... Bxf2, e.g. 19 Rxf2 Rh4+ etc, or 19 Bxc6 Bxg3+ 20 Kg1 Ne2 mate. |
Jun-20-22 | | HorsePlay: Was working through game. And is 15 bxf3 for black still a mate scenario?? |
Jun-20-22
 | | Dionysius1: I chose 18...Rxg3 with lots of mates, such as Q on g2 via h3, or R on h1 via h3 |

Jun-20-22
 | | keypusher: <HorsePlay: Was working through game. And is 15 bxf3 for black still a mate scenario??> Looks like, e.g. 16.Nxf3 Rxg2+! 17.Kxg2 Qg4+ 18.Bg3 (18.Kh2 Nf4!) 18....Nf4+ and 19.Kg1 Qxg3+ or 19.Kh1 Qh3+. Good eye! That would be tough to work out over the board. |
Jun-20-22 | | Brenin: <Horseplay, keypusher>: Another nice line after 15 ... Bxf3 is 16 Bg3 Bxg2 (threatening 17 ... Qh3+ 18 Kg1 Qh1 mate) 17 Kxg2 Nf4+ with mate in 2 (or in 1 if 18 Kf3). |
Jun-20-22 | | saturn2: 18...Rxg3 leads to mate |
Jun-21-22 | | Z free or die: <<goodevans> I thank <henilsson> for his regular reminders that co is still alive and cricking> Cricking?! My neck does a lot of that!
Anyways, your comment gave me an idea - that in addition to an absolute ignore list, <CG> might also consider a <throttle-down list>, i.e. you get to select 1/N post filtering for any given user. An unusual concept, admittedly, but it has its merits... . |

 | | Dionysius1: <Z free or die>. I keep a number of kibitzers on ignore, but I regularly search for them on Search Kibitzing to see what other people are saying about them. Your way would be fun too. |
