Aug-02-17 | | Marmot PFL: I don't like fixed pawns like black seems to have here as white can use c4, d5, f5 for his knight although it will be hard to convert that into major advantage. |
Aug-02-17
 | | OhioChessFan: <not not> Nc6, then White plays Nc4 and I think his Knight is better. |

Aug-02-17
 | | Check It Out: Magnus may be looking to start trouble on the kingside with all the fire power over there. |
Aug-02-17 | | not not: My thinking to that was to play pawn b3 - sending this pawn to exchange if Nc4. But white can play pawn c3, refusing to exchange, and then black pawn is stuck for good. So maybe you are right, the whole idea of pawn b3 will not work |
Aug-02-17 | | Marmot PFL: 19... Nd4 20 Nxd4 cxd4 21 Nb6 Qb7 22 Ra4 i though just won a pawn but Rb4 d5 gets complicated |
Aug-02-17
 | | OhioChessFan: 21. Nb6 for sure. After that, Ra4 looks like the kind of move I made when I was 10, but it might work. Maybe just Nd5. |
Aug-02-17 | | SirRuthless: MAgnus just jettisoning a6 for counter play. He will kill or be killed today. |
Aug-02-17 | | BOSTER: I'd say black is better, He has two open files, and f2 pawn is weak. |
Aug-02-17
 | | Sally Simpson: What's going oin?
click for larger viewCarlsen is sniffing around and c2 and f2. |
Aug-02-17
 | | Sneaky: Stockfish is suggesting this bizarre line: =0.00 (27 ply) 23...Bxb6 24.Be7 d3 25.Qxd3 Bxf2+ |
Aug-02-17 | | not not: In the age of internet, armed with google, I feel to be an expert on anything! |
Aug-02-17 | | not not: Someone deleted my comment - fake news media are watching! Make America great again, mr President |

Aug-02-17
 | | Sneaky: Walk away for two minutes and suddenly the board reduces to heavy artillery. |
Aug-02-17
 | | OhioChessFan: <Sneaky> no kidding. I spent 5 minutes cleaning out my car and missed more action than I'd sat through the previous 30. |
Aug-02-17
 | | Sally Simpson: It's because you swore Not Not.
Never seen the Bxb6 idea. thought sure Rxf6 was coming. |
Aug-02-17
 | | chancho: Aronian playing like a killah.
I hope he wins the candidates and faces Carlsen. Their styles would make for some great stuff otb. |
Aug-02-17
 | | OhioChessFan: Let's see....a Lasker review.....White has better King safety with better Kingside Pawns. Black has 3 Pawn islands, although he has more advanced Pawns and consequently more space. Black owns a couple nice half open files. White's advanced b Pawn really isn't a threat. I'll call this even. |
Aug-02-17 | | Marmot PFL: Black recovers the pawn and gets rid of bad bishop and it looks even. white should have tried to keep the knight or bishop. |
Aug-02-17 | | paavoh: @JBC: <Excuse me, but what is the obvious part of it and why so?> Sorry, English is not my native language. I just meant that getting at least a draw is <obviously> any player's wish for a good start. I do not think that a loss would ever qualify as <a good start> at this level. And only now I see that <beenthere240> explained it much better. |

Aug-02-17
 | | Sneaky: To retain complexity in the position, remove the rooks. To turn it into a textbook draw, remove the queens. |
Aug-02-17 | | Boomie: Release the Karjakin seems to have a comfortable edge over Sviddled While Rome Burned. |
Aug-02-17
 | | keypusher: 29.Qb3+ followed by Ra8 looks good to this simple mind. |
Aug-02-17
 | | keypusher: I guess ...d3 is the answer. |
Aug-02-17 | | Boomie: MVL has a nice thing going against the reigning champ. Plus the champ is getting into time trouble. Should So lose this game, it will be interesting to see how he is able to shake it off. He has seemed a bit frail psychologically in the past, but has become tougher as he achieved some success. To win a world championship match, you have to be very strong minded. That means you can't let prior games nag at you. You have to forget it and attend to the moment. |
Aug-02-17
 | | Sneaky: Carlsen has the draw in hand with 33...Qf4+ 34.Kh1 Qf1+ 35.Kh2 Qf4+ etc. I think he might as well take it, there's no winning this position. Too bad he can't play 33...Rg6 — it's almost is a forced mate, except for that little detail of Qg8#. |
