Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-24-19  ChessHigherCat: The line that jumped out at me right away was Nxh2 because if Kxh2 Qh5+ because if Kg2?? royal pawn fork.

But what if Nxh2 Kg1?

29...Nxh2 30. Kg1 f3 31. Qd1 Nxf1 32. Kxf1 Qh5 33. Ke1 Qh1+ 34. Nf1

wins the exchange and a pawn but there's probably better

Apr-24-19  ChessHigherCat: Yeah, got that one right but what I don't understand is why white left b4 en prise for 4 moves in a row? Was that a poison pawn somehow?
Apr-24-19  Cheapo by the Dozen: My first try was an immediate 29 ... Qh5. That fails in multiple ways.

My second try was to unblock the knight via 29 ... Nxd2. That fails because White can play h4 before Black can play ... Qh3.

My third try was the game line. I checked that the knight was well and truly poisoned, and then quickly decided that if White tried to lose less than exchange-and-pawn Black would have a ferocious attack, while if White let the rook hang Black's attack would still be strong.

The engine agrees. :)

Apr-24-19  Walter Glattke: Slaughtering festival with 29.-Nxh2 30.Kxh2!? Qh5+ 31.KgI f3 32.Nxf3 gxf3 33.Qxf3 Rxf3 34.Kg2 Rbf8 35.Be3 Qg4 36.Ra6 Qxe4 About +10 for black mate in ??? but comes. If 29.-Nxh2 30.Kg1 denies mate: better 30.-Qh5 31.gxf4 (Ra7!?) Qh3 32.Qe3 Nf3+ 33.Nxf3 gxf3 34.Qxf3 black wins.
Apr-24-19  agb2002: White threatens Nxf3.

Black can resume the attack with 29... Nxh2:

A) 30.Kxh2 Qh5+ 31.Kg1 (31.Kg2 f3+ wins) 31... f3, with the double threat Qh3 and fxe2, wins.

B) 30.Rd1 Qh5

B.1) 31.Kg1 f3 32.Qd3 Qh3 wins.

B.2) 31.Kg2 f3+ wins.

B.3) 31.f3 Nxf3+ 32.Kg2 Qh3+ 33.Kf2 Qxg3+ 34.Kf1 Qg1#.

C) 30.f3 Nxf1 wins decisive material (31.Nxf1 fxg3 32.Nxg3 gxf3 33.Qe3 Qg6 34.Nf5 Rxf5 35.exf5 Qxf5 - + [3p]).

D) 30.gxf4 Nxf1 31.Nxf1 Qh5+ 32.Kg1 exf4 - + [r+p vs N]).

  sjunto: 30. ... f3 or 30- ... Qh5+ win decisive material.
Apr-24-19  saturn2: I saw 29...Nxh2
30. Kxh2 (otherwise loss of material) Qh5+ 31. Kg1 f3 32. Qe3 Qh3
Apr-24-19  malt: Seen 29...N:h2 30.f3
(30.K:h2 Qh5+ 31.Kg1 f3 32.N:f3 gf3 33.Qe3 (Qd3)...Qh3 wins )

30...N:f3(...N:f1)31.N:f3 fg3 32.Nd2 Qh5+ 33.Kg1 Bh6 34.Rf5 Be3+ 35.Q:e3 Qh2+ 36.Kf1 g2+ wins

Apr-24-19  TheaN: Straightforward here that if it doesn't work to exchange on d2 with Nxd2, then f3 and then Qh5, on virtue of Rg1. Black would want to take the meager pawn shield White has. After 29....Nxh2 Black does this with tempo.

I guess White doesn't have to get mated, but the position's in shambles. After 30.Kxh2 Qh5+ -+ decides easily, if the Rook moves Qh5 still does, and if the Rook doesn't move Nxf1 will at least win material.

offramp: A strange puzzle because Black has no choice. White is going to play 30. Nxf3 and that must be prevented, and there is only one sensible way to do that.

The remaining moves are a complete doddle.

Diocletian: The first move I considered was 29...Qh5 intending checkmate! I saw next that my opponent was rated 1897 and might see through the trick and play...30.NxN. So next I just played 29...Nxh2. My opponent took the knight, 30.KxN, and then walked away angry. 0-1. At least he did not sweep the pieces from the board.

eternaloptimist: I solved it but it took me several minutes to do so. Then again I’m tired 💤 b/c I worked an 8 hour shift earlier today. 😃 I probably could’ve solved it sooner if I wasn’t so tired. <Cheapo> I also looked at an immediate 29...♕h5, possibly followed by ...fg3. It would depend on what White would’ve played on his 30th move. Although eventually I figured opening up White’s ♔side position w/ 29...♘h2 was the way to go.
Apr-24-19  TheaN: <offramp: A strange puzzle because Black has no choice.>

While I agree with the rest of your post, there's a harmless move for Black, Nxd2, so there's definitely a choice.

Measures at 0.35 so pretty even: White's minor advantage probably comes from Black having the dark squared pawns.

Apr-24-19  whiteshark: <eternaloptimist: 💤> Where'd you get that?

Breunor: I thought this was easier than Monday.

Although there were a lot of mistakes here. It looks like 27 Rf1? Is the final losing move, scoring at -2.93. Instead kh1 is -1.02.

Computer has trouble with this game; I had to run it pretty long to find black's 28th move (it actually prefers Qe8).

Apr-24-19  zb2cr: 29. ... Nxh2 does the trick. Accepting the sacrifice with 30. Kxh2, Qh5+; 31. Kg1, f3 leaves White having to sacrifice his Queen to escape mate, e.g., 32. Qe3, Qh3 or 32. Re1, fxe2; 33. Rxe2.

louispaulsen88888888: Tried Qh5 first but doesn’t work on account of h4. Then hit upon Nxh2. Note that after Kxh2, f3 also wins( as well as Qh5).

Breunor: Diocletian, are you Percivaldi? If so, it's great having a player of your strength here! (Your avatar makes you look older).
Apr-26-19  whiteshark: Thanks, <eternaloptimist:>. Well, I'm not gonna buy an iPhone because of that. :)

eternaloptimist: You are welcome, <whiteshark>! I love my iPhone but I agree the 💤 isn’t a good enough reason for u to buy 1. :)
