 | | Phony Benoni: 22.Re8 and the fox sends the chickens clercking. |
Jan-30-18 | | ChessHigherCat: Re8 Qxe8 (or Rxe8 Qg7#) Qf6+ Rg7 Qxg7# |
Jan-30-18 | | Patriot: 22.Re8 pins the rook and diverts the queen from defending f6. 22...Qg5 is a defensive illusion since 23.Qxg5 has no good answer. |

 | | FSR: I agree. |
Jan-30-18 | | lost in space: Have nothing to add to what was said from <PB>, <CHC>, <Pat> and <FSR> |
Jan-30-18 | | lost in space: Fox won versus Clerk; it should be possible to create a pun out of it?! |
Jan-30-18 | | ChessHigherCat: <lost in space: Fox won versus Clerk; it should be possible to create a pun out of it?!.> Lost in time: All clocks got all ferked |

 | | al wazir: What was black's a5-a4 maneuver all about? Was he sending that soldier forward to attack the white forces singlehandedly? |
Jan-30-18 | | Cheapo by the Dozen: White has two threats, each defended by a different Black piece. Re8 pins one of those pieces and greatly bothers the other. The simplest defenses -- the captures -- are fatal diversions. No other defense happens to work either. |
Jan-30-18 | | saturn2: 22 Re8 Bb7 23 RxQ RaxR |
Jan-30-18 | | agb2002: White has a knight for a bishop.
Black threatens Qg5.
The rook on g8 stops Qg7# and the black queen prevents Qf6+. Therefore, 22.Re8: A) 22... Qxe8 23.Qf6+ Rg7 24.Qxg7#.
B) 22... Rxe8 23.Qg7#.
C) 22... Qg5 23.Qxg5 followed by Qg7#. |
Jan-30-18 | | leRevenant: 2/2 and gliding |
Jan-30-18 | | viking978: @saturn2
"saturn2: 22 Re8 Bb7 23 RxQ RaxR"
If 22... Bb7 then 23.Qg7#. |
Jan-30-18 | | Once: A neat little quartet of variations:
If 22...Rxe8 23. Qg7#
If 22...Qxe8 23. Qf6+ Rg7 24. Qxg7#
If 22...Qg5 we can either chop the Q with 23. Qxg5 and mate on g7 or we can play 23. Rxg8+ Qxg8 24. Qf6+ or 23...Kxg8 24. Qxg5+, leading to quick mates. If any other "pass" move (other than the suicidal 22...Qf6), 23. Qg7# What fun! |
Jan-30-18 | | AlicesKnight: 22.Re8 seems to be on the case; if...RxR then it is mate at once; if ...QxR then 23.Qf6+forces mate, and if ....Qg5 then 23.RxR+ QxR; 24.Qf6+ wins (or if the K captures the R, White wins the Q). |

Jan-30-18 | | Mayankk: First thought is to try for a Rook Lift, fitting it in any of the tactical sacs. Doesn’t quite work. Next idea is to deflect either the Queen or the Rook and mate on g7 directly or via f6. You realise that Re8 deflects at least one of them and hence the solution. 2/2 so far. |
Jan-30-18 | | saturn2: <viking If 22... Bb7 then 23.Qg7#.>
Thanks. That is one move quicker than what I had in mind: 23 Qf6+ Rg7 24 QxR++ |
Jan-30-18 | | The Kings Domain: Nice puzzle and good game. |
Jan-30-18 | | Sularus: Re8 deflects :) |
Jan-30-18 | | Pasker: Nice puzzle. One move deflects two defenders at the same time, brilliant. |
Jan-30-18
 | | Fusilli: What a beauty. <CG> bypassed the opportunity to make it a more difficult puzzle with white to play at move 17, but since 17.Nf6 is only a fake sac, it wouldn't quite meet the requirements for a good puzzle. It would be quite hard to see all the way to 22.Re8 from 17.Nf6 though. |

 | | dorsnikov: Even I got that one! |

 | | NM JRousselle: 14...a4 has to be a mistake. The position is SCREAMING for d5. |
Jan-30-18 | | eblunt: I started with Re7 which wins fairly quickly, before realising pushing it one more square was even better |
