Feb-09-22  Stolzenberg: 8. ... Qxf6 seems to be the better try.

15. Nf5 - nice sacrifice! 15. ... exf5 could see 16. Nd5 Qd6 17. Nxb4 Qxb4 18. Bxf7+ Kxf7 19. Qxd7+ for example.

19. ... Bb6? drives the last nail into the coffin, but after 19. ... Kb8 20. Nbd6 cxd6 21. Nxd6 Ba4 (what else?) 22. Nxf7 Bxb3 23. axb3 White would easily win.

Feb-19-22  Stolzenberg: 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 Bb4 5. Bg5 dxc4 6. e4 = Queen's Gambit Declined, Ragozin Defense, Vienna Variation (D39). In this game White reached the same position without the black pawn c4, which was surely good for him.
Feb-21-22  Stolzenberg: After 8. ... Qxf6 9. Bc4 White would reach D39, see 1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 Bb4 5. Bg5 dxc4 6. e4 h6 7. Bxf6 Qxf6 8. Bxc4, which is nowadays played on top level. However he could continue with 9. Qa4+ Nc6 10. Ne5 instead, which looks good for him, doesn't it?
Feb-21-22  Gregor Samsa Mendel: I always thought playing 5..e5 was one of the main points behind Marshall's Defense.

perfidious: <GSM>, it is, and the reason why 4.Nf3 is preferred in master praxis to the more aggressive, but only superficially stronger 4.e4.
Feb-22-22  Stolzenberg: After 5. ... e5 White can choose:

6. dxe5 as in Steinitz vs Gunsberg, 1891 or

6. d5 as in Marshall vs Gunsberg, 1902 or

6. Nf3 as in Kotov vs Ragozin, 1956
