Oct-21-20  Nullifidian: Like yesterday's puzzle, white wins a free piece with a tactic.

44. ♕xe3

If the queen is taken, that opens up the diagonal for the bishop.

45. ♗xf6+ ♕g7 (♖xf6?? 46. ♖g8# or ♖g7 46. ♖xh5+ ♔g8 47. ♗d5+ ♖ff7 (♕xd5/♕e6/♕f7 48. ♖xg7#) 48. ♖xg7+ ♔f8 49. ♖h8#) 46. ♗xg7+ ♔g8 (♖xg7 47. ♖xg7 ♖f5 (all other moves are mate with ♖h7# or ♖g8#) 48. ♗xf5 any move 49. ♖h7#) 47. ♗d5+ ♖f7 48. ♗f6+ ♖hg7 (♔f8 49. ♖g8#) 49. ♖xg7+ ♔f8 50. ♖g8# or ...♔h8 50. ♖xf7#

Black's best continuation is probably 44... ♖h6, giving the king some much-needed breathing space, but after 45. ♕g3 there will be a lot of pressure along the g-file.

Oct-21-20  malt: 44.Q:e3 de3 45.B:f6+ Rg7

(45...R:f6 46.Rg8# )

Oct-21-20  Brenin: It was easy to see 44 Qxe3, since taking the Q leads to a quick mate. One had to check that other responses, such as 44 ... a3 (as played) or 44 ... Bxg5 (45 Rxg5), were inadequate. Black seemed to be doing fine until 18 ... f5 opened up the K-side and accelerated White's attack.
Oct-21-20  morfishine: <44.Qxe3> leaves Black's position a smoldering wreckage
Oct-21-20  TheaN: As <Brenin> correctly points out, this Wednesday is made up to difficulty for the alternatives, not because of the main point.

After <44.Qxe3!> White's one tempo ahead of every defense Black throws at her. Taking is <not> key, as it loses to the windmill-esque setup regardless of response: 44....dxe3 45.Bxf6+ Rg7 (Rxf6 46.Rg8#; Qg7 46.Rxg7 Rxg7 (else Rg8#) 47.Bxg7+ #6) 46.Rxg7:

Optimal configuration for White here. 46....Qxg7 (else Rg8#; with or without a spite check on h3) 47.Bxg7+ Kg8, I didn't see the forced mate here and settled on 48.Bxf8?! (Bd5+! #5 if played correctly) Kxf8 49.Bc6 a3 50.Bd5 +- to stop the queen side pawns definitely which should prompt resignation; mate to follow in twenty moves or so.

So. Taking is a no go. That leads to just two alternatives for Black. I don't think 44....Bxg5 45.Rxg5! is much better than taking because White keeps the same threats in the position with the bishop pair vs the useless rook on h7. After 45....Rd8 (the only defense for d4) 46.Rd5 +- White's absolutely crushing; that said, the simple 46.Bxh7 is #7 apparently.

<44....a3> probably Black's only reasonable try to relay the play partly to the queen side. The logical move is <45.Qg3>. Mind that White just loses a tempo after 45.Ba1 b3. Better however is to completely unhinge the position with 45.Bd5!! Qxd5 46.Rxd5! axb2 (dxe3 47.Bxf6+! still) 47.Qd2 +-. <45....Bxg5 46.Qxg5! +->

And this is the other key position, perhaps the true point of the position. White again has the bishop pair for a rook, but Bb2 is in, so will have to make sure to play it right from here. 47....Qg7 is too slow, 48.Qc5! +- ends it right away. However, Black also has no time for <46....axb2 47.Bxh7> and she can't take back: <47....Qxh7 (Kxh7 48.Qxh5#) 48.Qe5+ Rf6 49.Qxf6+ Qg7 50.Qxg7#>.

Great middle game combination.

Oct-21-20  Walter Glattke: Found an interesting change after 43.Qxe3 Bxg5 (FSR) 44.Bxd4+ Bf6 45.Bxf6+ Rxf6 46.Bxh7 Kxh7 47.Qe4+ Kh6 (47.-Kh8? 48.Qa1+) 48.Qg2 mating
Oct-21-20  mel gibson: I saw many other possible lines but not the text line. Stockfish 12 agrees with the first ply
and says mate in 17:

Oct-21-20  Cheapo by the Dozen: I saw the first two moves, but missed the refutation of 45 ... Rg7.
Oct-21-20  scruggs: This quarantine is getting to me I didn't even realize it's Monday
Oct-21-20  agb2002: White has the bishop pair for a bishop, a knight and a pawn.

Black threatens Bxg5.

The bishop on b2 x-rays Black's bishop and king. This suggests 44.Qxe3:

A) 44... dxe3 45.Bxf6+ Rg7 (45... Rxf6+ 46.Rg8#; 45... Qg7 46.Bxg7+ wins) 46.Rxh5+ Kg8 47.Bd5+ Rff7 (47... Qxd5 48.Rxg7#) 48.Rxg7+ Kf8 49.Rh8#.

B.2) 45... Rh6 46.Bxd4+ Rff6 47.Bxf6+ Rxf6 48.Rxh5+ Kg7(8) 49.Qg3+ Kf8 (49... Kf7 50.Rh7+ wins) 50.Rh8+ Ke7 51.Rh7+ Rf7 52.Qg5+ Ke8 (else mate next) 53.Rh8+ Rf8 54.Bg6+ wins.

Oct-21-20  Eduhttp: Very Nice game and combination!!
Oct-22-20  saturn2: <Walter Glattke: Found an interesting change after 43.Qxe3 Bxg5 (FSR) 44.Bxd4+ Bf6 45.Bxf6+ Rxf6 46.Bxh7 Kxh7 47.Qe4+ Kh6>

After 47.....Qf5 instead the white attack is over. Therefore 44.Rxg5 is necessary in this line.
