Penguincw: I don't know how up to date it is, but I'm surprised that per Endgame Explorer: BB vs Q, there has only been one Q vs. BB ending before, ending in a win for the queen: P Thoren vs V Faibisovich, 1998.

I believe most of the time the queen does win, but it may take more than 50 moves.

Jan-11-19  RookFile: Reuben Fine said it should be a draw in Basic Chess Endings. Of course computers are rewriting a lot of the rules these days.

keypusher: A tablebase can tell you whether a Q v. 2BB ending is won or not, and how quickly. In this match SF had its tablebases enabled; A0 doesn't have a tablebase.

From offramp's last diagram the TB says it's mate in 69 moves if SF plays the best move, 171.Bd5, which of course it does. In the final position after 219....Qa1+, mate is 74 moves away. So, however good A0 may be, it's not as good as a tablebase. (Sort of like the tennis player who quit the game because he was never going to be as good as a wall.)

I wondered why DeepMind had the engines play on in tablebase positions, but it may be just because they wanted to see how A0 would compare to a tablebase. But they also had the engines play 50 moves in a position with only two kings and (opposite-color) bishops. So they may not know from a tablebase.
