 | | An Englishman: Good Evening: This game made no sense at all until Black played 34...Bd8, which if sound will become an unsolvable weekend puzzle some day. |
|
Mar-23-19 | | The17thPawn: 34...Bd8 is as pretty as it is potent. These kinds of retreats elude me. I guess onward is not always upward. |
|
Mar-24-19 | | Hokey pokey: Maybe 14.Bxd6 is safer with 14...Re8 15.Bb5 but it still remains an unusual and sharp position. Shankland went for the c pawn knowing he would also get the d pawn too. Gaining two pawns has got to be good, right? |
|
Mar-28-19 | | parmetd: Maurice Ashley called this game NN vs 19th century master. Shankland said a3 was just messing up his preparation. |
|
Sep-22-19 | | Theystolemymoney: For me at least onward was downward and it keeps getting lower. With my money I lost my sanity.
Anyhow, is that a known line or did shankland try to pull an ivanchuk? |
|
Feb-02-20 | | thegoldenband: I believe that if you thought for a moment, took your time, you would not resign. Or wait, maybe I don't believe that. I could be wrong -- or have I hit a nerve? |

 | | offramp: Right from the opening it looks like something from the 1870s, but these modern games are better in almost every way to their great predecessors. These days, the defence is much stronger right the way through. |
|
Feb-02-20 | | erimiro1: If Tears for Fears was chosen, the title "Mad World" desctibes the game as well. |

Feb-02-20 | | Jambow: I'm at a loss for words... Xiong has a tactical flair but this is exception tactical counter play by Shankland as well despite eventually succumbing to violent attack on his king... Generally I saw Sam as a strong solid player but this game is just flamboyant... Very good pick for GOTD cg.com |

Apr-21-24 | | mel gibson: This game is unusual -
you have 6 Black pieces bearing down on the White King yet it's a draw.
Normally it would be checkmate time. LOL |

Apr-21-24 | | Allderdice83: Analyzing with Stockfish: I don't like 8. Kf2; I prefer to keep the option to castle if I can, so I'd play 8. c3. 9. a3 is inaccurate, just kicking the bishop to where it wants to go. 15 ... Ne5 is inaccurate; Stockfish likes 15 ... Nf6, putting a clamp on the passed pawn. 16. Nc5 is a mistake (White should play 16. Ne4, stopping 16 ... Nxf3+) punished by the first real shot of the game, 16 ... Nxf3+! The knight can't be taken; 17. gxf3?? Bh3+ 18. Kf1 Qe3#, and 17. Qxf3?? Re3 and the queen can't be held; i.e., 17. Qd5?? Qf4+ 18. Kg1? Qf2# 17 ... Bg4 is a serious mistake that throws away Black's advantage. 17 ... f5! is best. The game will likely continue 18. Qxf3 fxe4 19. Bxe4 Be6 20. Nxe6 Rxe6 21. d7 Rf6 22. Bd5+ Kh8 23. d8=Q+ Rxd8 24. Bxd8 Rxf3+ 25. Bxf3 Bxd8 (-1.9). Black has Q and N for R and P. Note that 19 ... Rf8? lets White equalize with 20. Bd5+ Be6 (not 20 ... Kf8?? 21. Qxf8#) 21. Bxe6+ Kh8 22. Bf5. 18 ... Re5 is the best move. Taking the rook is best. It's a (wild) game of chess from there.
White makes another mistake with 24. g4? which Black fails to punish with 24 ... Qf4+ 25. Kg2 Ndf6! (26. gxh5 gets mated after 26 ... Nxe4 27. Rhf1 Qg3+ 28. Kh1 Qxh3+ 29. Kg1 Bg3! 30. Rf3 Bh2+ 31. Kh1 Qxf3+ 32. Kxh2 Qg3+ 33. Kh1 Nf2#) 26. Nxf6+ Nxh6 27. Rh2 Nd5 (-1.5). I had 18 ... Rxe4, which is second-best, meaning +0.13. My idea was 19. Nxe4 Nxh2+. However, after 19 ... Nxh2+?? 20. Rxh2 Bxd1 21. Rxh4, White has more than ample compensation for the queen. Say 21 ... Bxc2 22. Bxc2 Qc6 23. Rd1! wins for White. Instead, after 19. Nxe4, Black has to play 19 ... Qc6. Now 20. gxf3? is a mistake due to 20 ... Bh3+ followed by 21 ... Qxc7, so White should play 20. Be2 Qxc7 21. Bxf3 Bxd7 22. Qd6! Bb5+ 23. Kg1 Qxc2 24. g3 Bc6 25. Qd2 (+0.5). |
