Jan-04-21  lost in space: What the others said
Jan-04-21  DrGridlock: A tricky Monday puzzle ... I wasted at least 15 seconds trying to make a Qxb2 queen sac work.
Jan-04-21  goldfarbdj: "It's Monday. Sac the queen. Okay, that doesn't go anywhere. How about the rook? There we go."
Jan-04-21  drollere: i lamented that the K seemed to have an escape square at b1 if the Q gave check at b3, and the solution appeared immediately: force the K onto a3.

An Englishman: Good Evening: The entire game has its interesting bits. That Black Rook in particular survives quite a few attempted sacrifices.
Jan-04-21  Brenin: The R, after a charmed life, eventually succeeds in sacrificing itself with 49 ... Rxa3+. After 47 g5 Qc2 White's fate was sealed; 47 Qf3, trying to force Qs off, e.g. 47 ... Qc2 48 Qd1, would have given some hope of survival.
Jan-04-21  Damenlaeuferbauer: After long thinking, the strong Armenian GM Hovhannes Gabuzyan finally found the mate in 2 moves with the nice rook sacrifice 49.-,Rxa3+! 50.Kxa3,Qa4#. This game shows how to play my beloved Najdorf Sicilian with the black pieces, even if you are not a genius like Mikhail Tal, Bobby Fischer or Garry Kasparov (the 3 greatest Najdorf players of all times)!
Jan-04-21  agb2002: Black has a bishop for a knight.

White threatens Nxc2.

The pawn on b5 makes a quick mate possible: 49... Rxa3+ 50.Kxa3 Qa4#.

Jan-04-21  Messiah: This is extremely easy, indeed, but the easiness does not ruin its looks!
Jan-04-21  boringplayer: Ah, Monday!
Jan-04-21  stacase: The Rook sacrifice was obvious, but I kept looking at 50.b4+ until 50.Kxa3 (forced) was actually played THEN I saw 50...Qa4#

This is another one where White should have tossed it in after 49...Rxa3+

Jan-04-21  Oxspawn: White seems to have played very passively. Was there an alternative? What about 29. Rxd6 Kxd6 30. Qf6+ followed by Qxf7....? Is there some counterplay? At worst it is still only 0-1.
Jan-04-21  zb2cr: Forced mate in two, with 49. ... Rxa3; 50. Kxa3, Qa4#.

Jan-04-21  TheaN: Yada yada mate in two etc. No real point discussing Black's final combination. The game however is a good example of keeping pressure in a Sicilian... from both sides.

White was doing alright, not great, up til 28.c3?! where it's <visible> Black's getting the better of the game by invading with the queen. After 28....Qe3 Black has the better pieces and White's game dwindled from there.

<Oxspawn: White seems to have played very passively. Was there an alternative? What about 29. Rxd6 Kxd6 30. Qf6+ followed by Qxf7....? Is there some counterplay? At worst it is still only 0-1.> 29.Rxd6 is an attempted 'game muddying' going very bad after 29....Bxe4+ 30.Ka1 Kxd6, given 31.Qxf6+ Kc7 32.Qxe5+ Kb7 -+ and only the queen isn't going to save White. Mind that Bxe4+ isn't key (despite free) given that Black has escape squares on b8 and d7 in critical situations.

Jan-04-21  saturn2: Queen and rook attacked Black mates in two moves.
Jan-04-21  Oxspawn: Thanks <TheaN>. At least I would have got an early supper.
Jan-04-21  AlicesKnight: It's Monday, so what shall we sacrifice? Queen? - no good. What about the Rook? Ah! ..... Rxa3+ forces the capture, whereupon Qa4 does the job.

gawain: The first move I looked at was 49...Rxa3+. So I did not have to look any further.

I like puzzles such as this one in which a friendly piece ends up blocking the king's escape square.

Jan-04-21  Cheapo by the Dozen: a-file instead of h-file.

That twist added embarrassingly long to my solving time. ;)

Jan-04-21  ajile: I got it after about 5 minutes but I doubt I would find this over the board in a real game.
