H. Nakamura 2829 - F. Caruana 2773, The match moved on to blitz tiebreaks after Caruana won this critical game.

May-02-20  Ulhumbrus: One of the commentators' remarks suggested that Nakamura faced a King's Indian formation which he liked playing as Black and perhaps did not like facing this formation as White.

One question is whether after 13...bxc6 White can play the pawn advance c4-c5 either now by 14 c5 or later. This won't work if Black can respond with ...d5.

In the game Korchnoi vs Robert E Byrne, 1973 When after 11...Be6 Korchnoi played 12 c5! Byrne responded with 12...Ne8 and Korchnoi said something like this < This is not only positional capitulation but also psychological capitulation. But what can Black do?>

One example of a possible reason is that playing 12...d5 would have left the e5 pawn en prise.

If that was the reason, this suggests that if White is going to play c5 he needs his king's knight on f3 so that ...d5 in reply to c5 will leave the e5 pawn en prise.

This in turn suggests that 13 dxc6 is inconsistent with 11 Nd2 unless White can arrange something other than the pawn advance c4-c5 from the position, eg the pawn advance b4-b5.

MissScarlett: Magnus in the commentary (instead of 58...Qd4), <Rb1, just be technical>. #sangfroid
May-02-20  SChesshevsky: <...Nakamura faced a King's Indian formation...and perhaps did not like facing this formation as White...>

Maybe, but after 20...Bf7 White probably should feel pretty happy with the opening vs. a KI like structure. Seemingly has good expansion on queenside without being too extended with apparent good prospects there. Black has weak d6 and any Kside play looks to take time. Though does have the ability to come quick if gets going without proper counter.

Maybe toughest for Naka is that he has to think about both realizing qside advantage and proper kside defense while Caruana just had to concentrate on kside counter play.

Not sure about 32. Qf1 leaving the B hanging. Was it an oversight or Naka maybe being a bit too optimistic on the queenside?

May-02-20  Ulhumbrus: <MissScarlett: Magnus in the commentary (instead of 58...Qd4), <Rb1, just be technical>. #sangfroid> This suggests that Carlsen has a mastery of technique so that he can use it as a weapon when he wants to.
May-03-20  Albanius: PLEASE FIX: Opening is misclassified: this is a Kings Indian Classical variation - with the nonstandard 4..Bf5 5 Nh4 Bd2 6 e4 e5 7 Nf3 Bg7 move order. Black is a tempo up with the B on d7, but 14..Be6 gives the tempo back, reaching a normal KID. There might be games in the database with the position after move 14.

E97 may be the most appropriate pigeonhole. It is clearly a KI middlegame. A46 is supposed to exclude KID.

May-09-20  Jambow: Very well played by Fabiano... Position maneuvering or brute force tactics a very universal player of the highest caliber...

Perhaps even smart enough to realize to out play Nakamura you must be patient because if Hikaru has a flaw it is that he is not.

Here Black could have played the natural
52...Rxb7.
There might have followed
53. Nxd6.

53...Qg3+
54. Kh1▢.

Now Black has a dazzling tactic:
54...Rb1!!
55. Rxb1▢
..and now
55...f2

leads to the seemingly inescapable threat of ...Qh3#.

Unfortunately,
56. Qh6!+- kiboshes the whole variation!
