Aug-18-20  Kwesi: Incredible double queen sacrifice
Aug-18-20  luzhin: A Shirov masterpiece. If White accepts the initial Q offer with 24.Qxg4 then the main line is 24...Nxd2+ 25.Ka1 b3 26.Bb1 Ra4+ 27.Na2 bxa2 28.Bxa2 Nc5!! with the point that after 29.dxc5 Rxc5 there is no good defence to 30...Rxa2+ and Rxa5 and mate, as moving the b-pawn allows Bf6 mate. And if 29.b4 Ncb3+ 30.Kb2 Rxb4 and White's pile of major pieces way over on the K-side are helpless to prevent mate.
Aug-26-20  onigorom: You need artistic intuition for this kind of play. This is another level of the art of chess.

Alex Schindler: This is my pick for game of the year. the line Luzhin identified with that absolutely stunning Nc5!! idea... to see that at the beginning of the queen sac combination is, well, Shirovian.
Sep-04-20  spingo: Pun: <Too Wise You Are, Too Wise You Be...> or perhaps <YYUR, YYUB...>
Sep-04-20  siggemannen: Fire On Line?
Sep-05-20  EdwinKorir: More fire on the board
Sep-05-20  botvinnik64: Nice! Alexei!!!
Sep-10-20  malt: Excellent game !!

An Englishman: Good Afternoon: Yes, Game of the Year. Only wish I had had the honor of landing on the receiving end of a move like 23...Ne4 during my playing career.
Sep-11-20  Granny O Doul: I played Shirov a couple of times on the ICC. He was kind enough to say "it was a pleasure to play" some particular move. I felt proud to have made his day like that.

An Englishman: Good Evening: Hmmmm...have I seen this one before?
Sep-17-20  boringplayer: I got this one, but no way I would have played ...Rc4. Shirov is still amazing!
Sep-17-20  Walter Glattke: White threatens gxf5, Bd3xf5 and Bxc4, I found a change with better continuations for black by 26.-Nf2 27.Bxf5 Nxd1 28.Rxd1 exf5 29.g5!? Ng4 (29.-Ne4? 30.Be1 draw)
Sep-17-20  Walter Glattke: 26.-Nxg4 27.Bxf5 Nf2 28.Qb3 don't know whether 27.Bxf5 knack the combination.

Jimfromprovidence: I thought that black was losing at the puzzle position. It turns out what to me was a defensive, maybe trap move 26...Nxg4, below, is good enough to win material.

What I mean by a trap move is after 26...Nxg4, black might have been hoping for 27 Bxc4??, which loses spectacularly to 27...Nxd2++ 28 Ka1 Qb1#.

Anyway, CG gives a different line than the text.

-2.27 (30 ply) 26...Nxg4 27 Rg2 (seeing 27...Ngf2) 27...Ngf2 28.Rxf2 Nxf2 29.Bxf5 Nxd1 30.Bxe6 fxe6 31.Rxd1.

Black gives up a queen, two knights and a pawn for a queen, rook, bishop and pawn, winning the exchange.

Sep-17-20  Honey Blend: 23. ... ♘e4!! is quite a bombshell. White should have taken his chance to play 21. ♗xc4 so that c-file gets closed if pawn takes bishop, or after 21. ... ♖xc4 there's no good way to get through.
Sep-17-20  schnarre: ...A beautiful Queen sacrifice by Shirov!
Sep-17-20  RandomVisitor: White had improvements with 15.e4, 20.h5, 22.Na4, and a last chance 24.Bxe4 to keep the game even.

20.h5! finally gets the white attack going.

Sep-17-20  carpovius: 26...Nxg4 move of the year!
Sep-17-20  RandomVisitor: If you put

ДАНИИЛ ДВИРНЫЙ

...into Google translate you get:

DANIEL DVIRNY

...a better transliteration.

Sep-17-20  gym: 24. Bxe4 is a draw by Stockfish.
Sep-17-20  Walter Glattke: I made a mistake above, I think for 26.-Nxg4 27.Bxe4, maybe a draw, too, no stockfish analysis for move 26 until yet.
Sep-17-20  RandomVisitor: With 20.h5! white gets the chance to attack
