Jun-10-21 | | KevinDenelsbeck: What a pretty mate! |
Jun-10-21 | | nalinw: Was considering 30. Nxh7 ...
But then I noticed that the night covers f7 and h7 in the event of back rank mates - this lead me to remember Adams-Torre E Z Adams vs Carlos Torre, 1920 Either drive the Black Queen away from defending e7 or attack the Rook on e8 So 30. Qh5 - threatening the Rook and also Qxh7. Didnt think of g6 though ... so only half a point |

Jun-10-21 | | Brenin: 30 Qh5, forking h7 and e8, was not hard to see. Black's best defence seems be 30 ... g6 31 Qxh7+ Kf8 32 Rxe7 Rxe7 (Qd4+ 33 R7e3) 33 Rxe7 Qxe7 (33 ... Qd4+ 34 Kg2 Qxd5+ 35 Ne4 or Re4) 34 Qxe7+ Kxe7 35 Ne6 Kd7 36 Nf8+ and 37 Nxg6, with a winning endgame for White. |

Jun-10-21 | | Cellist: <Brenin> In your version, there is a simple mate: 34.Qh8# |
Jun-10-21 | | johnnydeep: I didn't solve it, but I can sure appreciate the elegance of this mate! |

Jun-10-21
 | | chrisowen: Fan ie dart it Qh8 won no? |
Jun-10-21 | | TheaN: <30.Qh5 +-> and surprisingly, no defense is adequate. Of course, 30....Rxe3 31.Qxh7+ Kf8 32.Qh8+ Ke7 33.Rxe3+ +- is the point of this zwischenzug, as Black has no time to take on e3. 30....h6 shows the pressure on the e-file after 31.Qxe8+ Rxe8 32.Rxe8+ Qf8 33.Rxf8+ +-. Likely the main line <30....g6> follows the elegant <31.Qxh7+! Rxh7 (Kf8 32.Qh8#) 32.Rxe8+ Kg7 (Qf8 33.Rxf8+ +-) 33.R1e7+ +-> as Kh6 34.Rxh7# and White wins a rook in all variations. Surprisingly elegant line. |
Jun-10-21 | | TheaN: Oh, oops, 31....Kf8 does not follow 32.Qh8# as the queen's on f6, I was already a few moves in. Sloppy, but reviewing after Black moves the king and 32.Rxe7 is straightforward, though 32.Ne6+ also wins. Mainly 32.Rxe7 Rxe7 33.Rxe7 and now 33....Qxe7 does in fact drop defense of h8, 34.Qh8#, so Black can't retake on e7 twice and will be mated soon. |
Jun-10-21 | | drollere: i didn't get this one. i assumed white would play Qh5 and black would play h6, but i did not really think through the attack at e8. famous last words: "oh ... i guess that wins." |
Jun-10-21
 | | chrisowen: Qh5 it was outer x |
Jun-10-21 | | Brenin: Thanks, <cellist>, a mate in one is indeed preferable to a possibly lengthy K, N & P endgame. I hope I might have spotted it OTB. |
Jun-10-21 | | Refused: 30+Qh5 double attack on e8 and h7 should be curtains. 30...g6 doesn't solve the problem
31.Qxh7+! Rxh7 32.Rxe8+ Kg7 33.R1e7+ Qxe7 34.Rxe7 Kf8 35.Rxh7 |
