An Englishman: Good Morning: The best game of 2021? White played just a little too quietly, and 12.Rfe1 invited trouble. Funny detail--with 18...Ne4!? Black set traps to ensnare *both* players. 19.a3? falls into Black's trap, whereas 19.Qxe4! springs the trap Black had set to catch himself. 19...dxe4; 20.Rxd7 and we have complications. The final mating net is both rare and spectacular.
Jul-13-21  fabelhaft: <The best game of 2021?>

Well, it?s a pretty mate in 2 in the end, but these guys are in the 2500s and there are mistakes. But not easy to pick the game of the year, I don?t recall anything too memorable from the Candidates, maybe the title match will solve the problem

  0ZeR0: <An Englishman>

I'm not sure if it's the best game of 2021, but it's certainly the prettiest.

Jul-13-21  Mudphudder: This will be Pablo's immortal for sure.
Jul-19-21  Lovuschka: <An Englishman>

As Geoigios Souleidis points out on his Youtube channel "The Big Greek" (in German), 19.Qxe4! dxe4 20.Rxd7 Qe5 21.Rxb7 Bxc3 22.Nxc3 Rxc3 23.Bxc3 Qxc3 24.Rxd1 leads to an endgame where White is a small material disadvantage but has very active pieces.

Jul-20-21  qqdos: <David Howell>has published this spectacular game (London Sunday Times - 18:July:2021). His verdict - "One of the most beautiful checkmates you will ever see". Might I put forward a possible candidate puzzle - the position after Whte's move 24.Rd3? Yes, a #6!
Jan-11-22  Brenin: A splendid finish!
Jan-11-22  offramp: Three Herraras for Black's great play.
Jan-11-22  AlicesKnight: Herrera Hans Anderson a fairy tale two-Knight ...
Jan-11-22  goodevans: <qqdos: [...] Might I put forward a possible candidate puzzle - the position after Whte's move 24.Rd3?>

Might I put forward another - the position after Black's 18...Ne4.

White actually has a great way to avoid the catastrophic 19...Nxf2!

<AlicesKnight: Herrera Hans Anderson a fairy tale two-Knight ...>

Almost as good as the game!

<goodevans: White actually has a great way to avoid the catastrophic 19...Nxf2!> Yes, great puzzle "White to play and save the game". Tried to find it, failed, looked at the engine, won't spoil it: it's worth looking at, fellow kibitzers.

<AlicesKnight: Herrera Hans Anderson a fairy tale two-Knight ...> Better than the present pun.

Jan-11-22  MrMelad: Awesome game! 23...Ng4! is an amazing move, 24...d4!! is even better 25...Qg1! is the icing on the cake.

Really enjoyable stuff.

<0ZeR0: certainly the prettiest> Haven't seen all the games played in 2021 (yet) but from what I've seen I agree!

Jan-11-22  Autoreparaturwerkbau: <goodevans> and <Teyss> Indeed 19.? is a great mid-week puzzle for 'White to move and draw (save the game)'

click for larger view

The surprising solution gives white a draw (eval. 0,00). On the other hand, any other move loses (eval. -3,70 or worse) - eventhough with 2nd and 3rd best move it is still far from a 'walk in the park' as converting an overwhelming positional advantage into a 0-1.

Jan-11-22  Defrogger: Black: Take my queen with the bishop
White : No thanks!

Black: Take my queen with the rook
White : No

Black: Take my queen with the knight
White : Ok if you insist

Black: Mate sucka!

Its like a crazyhouse game: knight is more valuable than a queen

Jan-12-22  offramp: <offramp: Three Herraras for Black's great play.>

<Teyss: Don't know what is more impressive, the game or the fact our long-time beloved <offramp> is no longer a premium member.>

The people at chessgames.com took me to the public square. I was cashiered. I was stripped of privileges one by one..

The very last one was the tiny avatar of Albert Pike (King Leopold).

I was only left with nothing but my game collections...
