Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-22-24  mel gibson: I was looking for a fast checkmate but couldn't find one. 48. Pxe6+ leads to a draw.

Stockfish 16 says mate in 15:

48. Qh7+

(48. Qh7+ (1.Qh7+ Rg7 2.dxe6+ Kxe6 3.Qxg7 gxh4 4.Qd7+ Ke5 5.Qxb5+ Ke6 6.Qd7+ Ke5 7.Ra2 hxg3+ 8.fxg3 h4 9.Ra5+ Ke4 10.Qd5+ Ke3 11.Ra3+ Ke2 12.Rxf3 hxg3+ 13.Rxg3 f5 14.Qa2+ Kf1 15.Rg1+) +M15/98 177)

White wins _ mate in 15.

Apr-22-24  stacase: Cold have gone this way:
48. Qh7+ Rg7
49. dxe6+ Ke8
50. Qxg7 1-0

And Black has to defend against the mate at f7

Considering it's a puzzle, I figured the VERY obvious 48.Qh7+ wasn't it, but didn't see anything else that kept the pressure on, or any better moves for Black at 49... So always accept your opponent's resignation.

Apr-22-24  thegoodanarchist: Not too tough, but borderline Tuesday level.
Apr-22-24  saturn2: 48.h7 Rg7 49.dxe6+ and both

...Kf8 50.Rd8 Ke7 51.Rd7 or

...Kxe6 50.Qxg7 loses the Rg7.

So it is Q+R vs Q for white

Apr-22-24  TheaN: Key here is the menacing position of the pawn after White wins one rooks <48.Qh7+ Kf8> Rg7 is similar a few moves in <49.dxe6> threatening Qf7#, so <49....Rg7 50.Rd8+ Ke7 51.Qxg7+! Kxe6 (Kxd8 52.Qd7#) 52.Qd7+ Ke5 53.Re8#>.

<saturn2> not 50....Ke7 51.Rd7+? Kxe6! 52.Qxg7? Qxf2+ =

perfidious: Playing 48.dxe6+ does not appear to lead to much, but the zwischenschach 48.Qh7+ offers fresh vistas, with Black having no immediate threats against the king.

After 48.Qh7+, the options are unpalatable: 48....Rg7 49.dxe6+ or 48....Kf8 49.dxe6 leave Black without resource.

Not a typical Monday POTD, but instructive in that it imparts the value of considering <all> one's choices.

Check It Out: I found Qh7+, but a bit tough for a Monday.

  stevemcd87: White to play 48. ?

My original thought:
48. Qh7+ Rg7 49. dxe6+ Kf8 50. Qh8+ Rg8 51. Qxf6+ Ke8 52. Rd8#

Another variation if 49... Kxe6 instead of 49... Kf8:
48. Qh7+ Rg7 49. dxe6+ Kxe6 50. Qxg7 g4 51. Qd7+ Ke5 52. Qd6+ Kf5 53. Rd5+ Kg6 54. Rg5+ Kf7 55. Qd5+ Ke8 56. Rg8+ Ke7 57. Rg7+ Ke8 58. Qd7+ Kf8 59. Qe7#

I didn't spend too much time on it so I may not be accurate.

little ernie: Apparently the king is overloaded. Unusual.
Apr-22-24  whiteshark: <48.Qh7+>, and that's it.
