chrisowen: Negligent our and Ng6+ abattoir baulkline a job affair pat arrive oar bod tod gap Ng6+ dud!
Jul-03-22  saturn2: The whole week was flattering
Jul-03-22  saturn2: Havent I learnt to play Nbd2 insteas of Nc3. And then b3, Bb2? My opening knowledge is outdated
Jul-03-22  Hercdon: This is a Sunday puzzle?
Jul-03-22  Hercdon: I would have definitely made black 15th move, family fork!
Jul-03-22  takchess: This is the only way I can solve a Sunday puzzle.....
Jul-03-22  moncul36: Oops, this is a Monday puzzle.
Jul-03-22  agb2002: <goodevans: <agb2002: My impression is that the first move of the puzzle should have been the 15th.>

You might be right, although Black has maybe half a dozen moves that are better than 15...Nd2(?).>

Yes, for example b5 and Qd8, but the level was supposed to be insane.

It is interesting to see how quickly Black's position can go downhill: 15... b5 16.Nxe4 fxe4 17.f3 exf3 (17... Rxf4 18.fxe4 Rxf1+ 19.Rxf1 followed by Rf7) 18.Rxf3 and Black has problems to develop the queen side (18... Nd7 19.Nxc6).

Or 15... Qd8 16.Nxe4 Nxe4 17.Bxe4 Rxf4 18.Bb1 Rf6 19.Qh3 g6 (19... h6 20.Qd3) 20.f4.

Jul-03-22  agb2002: <Brenin: This weekend I decided to prioritise sleep over <CG> (where I live, POTD-time is 1am), and to wait until breakfast-time before looking at POTD or GOTD.>

"Finally, let us remind you that your objective in each training session will be to solve as quickly and accurately as possible. Thus, please don’t take this book to bed and attempt to solve as you are falling asleep, or in the morning when you have barely woken up. We want to encourage good habits, not bad ones!"

A. Smith, H. Tikkanen. The Woodpecker Method (2018).

I admit I like these bad habits quite a lot...

Check It Out: I dont see how mate in 3 can be avoided after 18.Ng6+.

Unless I'm missing something obvious, this is more like a Tuesday level puzzle.

Jul-03-22  johnnydeep: What's "insane" about this is that I solved it in 20 seconds. :-)
Jul-03-22  Shrinarayanan: Monday problem on a Sunday
Jul-03-22  Stanco: It took me less than a second

eternaloptimist: I actually solved this supposedly “insane” problem really quickly. Like some ppl hv already kibitzed this is more like a Monday or Tuesday puzzle
Jul-03-22  Rosbach: First time I managed to solve a 'Sunday' puzzle. This will probably never happen again though :-)

noads4me: Had to pinch myself on this one!
Jul-04-22  TheBish: <agb2002: My impression is that the first move of the puzzle should have been the 15th. 16.? looks like a Wednesday-Thursday level. For example, 16.Nxd5 Nxb3 17.Nxe7+ Kh8 18.N5g6+ hxg6 19.Rc3 and 20.Rh3#.>

Keen observation! I completely agree.

fredthebear: Did anyone recognize this as a Greco's Mate? https://chessfox.com/grecos-mate/

Greco taught us much about chess. Gotta practice your mating techniques; it will bring you happiness! This article gets Greco correct, but didn't know about the Max Lange Mate on the back rank! https://chessentials.com/checkmate-...

fredthebear: Oh, I almost forgot to say 18.Ng6+!! One doesn't see a Royal Family Fork knight sacrifice every day, either!

It's like askin' "Are eggs bad for you?" Eggs?! Eggs are EGGS! Didn't you watch RockY?!? Eggs were one of the Italian Stallion's secret weapons! And, they're inexpensive. Who would ask "Are eggs bad for you?" Bad is relevant to mommas and heaven/hell and your teeth (well, maybe dietary indigestion comes into play for some of us, but I just blow that off). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-R...

So, eat some eggs any which way you want (raw or cooked) and watch out for all those knight advances before you ever make a move, and practice your mating techniques!

fredthebear: Now before you go gettin' all tickled pink about this dandy Greco Mate combination, what the hey were you gonna do if Black plays 16...NxQb3? That puts a kink in White's cord, doesn't it?

NO! White hits 'em w/the double knight double punch of doom!!

If 16...NxQb3, then 17.NxQe7+ Kh8 18.N5g6+ hxNg6 19.Rc3 Ra7 20.Rh3# White performs a rook lift to replace his queen giving mate.

Now, I say again - eat some eggs however, watch out for those advancing knights before you ever make a move, and practice your mating techniques!

Ever had a smoothie?! https://greenlivingzone.com/raw-egg...

fredthebear: Here's a diagram after 16...QxNb3, White to move:

Solution: 17.NxQe7+ Kh8 18.N5g6+ hxNg6 19.Rc3 Ra7 20.Rh3#

In this case, with knights and no queens, it becomes Anastasia's Mate: https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/es...

Final position after 20.Rh3#:
