 | | Joshka: Wow, isn't it great these two combatants are giving you folks such high powered exciting, fighting chess for you to enjoy!!!;-) whoopee!! n DRAWS SHOULD NOT BE COUNTED!!! when will they ever learn!!! The best thing for World Championship Chess is for all the games to drawn AGAIN!! Maybe they will LEARN?? What a shameful display of sporting behavior. |

 | | Sally Simpson: My look at game 5
https://www.redhotpawn.com/chess-bl... Nice double Rook sac and Bishop sac from Giri which I give credit too and a nice drawing of a gangster in a car, but other than that I would not bother. The game is a non-event. https://www.redhotpawn.com/chess-bl... |
|
Dec-01-21 | | hoodrobin: Carlsen seems to control his opponent quite well. |

 | | HeMateMe: There is a point where funding for big matches will dry up if the players dont mix up the openings a bit. Petrosian was getting $5,000 before Fischer came along. |

 | | Clement Fraud: The game showed great promise for the first 21 moves; the rot set in when Nepomniachtchi recaptured the Bishop with his Queen. If White had instead tried 22.Rxa4... at least this would have been an "attempt" to retain the tension in the position. This is the second game in a row where Nepomniachtchi has shied away from battle. |

 | | Richard Taylor: The days of great chess is over as we see dull play and shorter time controls. It is now all for "the fans" who mostly have no idea about chess. But these games are rather dull. Is Neponomatchiweiatchiaski waiting for Godot? Or god knows? He has to take it to Carlsen...He can whip the Norwegian charlatan, knock him for a six!! It is time for these rather troglodytic Norwegians to bite the dust.... |
|
Dec-01-21 | | Albion 1959: I hope we are not going to see a repeat of the 2018 Caruana match, with 12 consecutive draws. Then Carlsen wins a rapid play / blitz finish, akin to a penalty shootout in football in extra time after a boring goalless draw. He won by the same fashion in 2018 against Karjakin after a 1-1 tie.
Not even Tigran Petrosian in his prime drew this many games ! |
|
Dec-01-21 | | optimal play: Another incredibly precise game.
Still nine games to go so it's possible one of them may yet make a slip, perhaps towards the end. As the challenger, Nepo should show a bit less caution. |

They'll need 14 draws! |

Dec-01-21 | | diceman: Nepo said in a post game interview.
He calculated a line, that wound up like this:
click for larger viewbut he didn't want to risk it, with a draw in hand. |
|
Dec-02-21 | | Jambow: <In recent years, I have posted on occasion of how the winning percentage of any elite player of this generation will suffer, chiefly due to the changed character of events in modern days.> Couldn't agree more they are playing at an even higher level than the maestros of yore but the challenge in front of them is much tougher than it ever was and risks are usually punished at a higher rate than they are rewarded. Interesting that the silicon beasts are decisive much more often than their carbon counter parts, which for me is hard to reconcile on some levels. |
|
Dec-02-21 | | cehertan: Magnus is a grizzled match player whose versatility is almost unprecedented. Against Caruana his shocking choice of the Sveshnikov was a stroke of genius, and again in this match he has found the perfect line to (so far) neutralize a tactical monster. Its hard to imagine Nepo feeling comfortable on the white side of a Marshall Gambit, but equally hard to imagine him bringing down perhaps the best technical/endgame player who ever lived in an Anti-Marshall or similar quiet open game. Id love to see Magnus sharpen things up a bit as white but this has never been his way. Meanwhile Nepo is waiting for the right moment to risk something because to fall behind against MC seems lethal. In short there are good strategic reasons for the status quo but things could turn interesting again (as in first 2 games) any time, lets hope. |
|
Dec-02-21 | | aventador: People on here seem to have an aversion to active, exciting, fighting draws. Every game so far has been enjoyable to watch. Nepo had an edge today, just didn't seem to find Ra5. Carlsen's had to work hard in a few games. Also, if this thing goes to tiebreaks... we just get more high-level chess! Nothing wrong with that. |

Dec-02-21 | | jerseybob: As I write this, game 6 is underway and it may turn out to be a brilliant win for one of the two, but so far - and this goes for the regulation portion of the 2018 match - the play has been disappointing! i can't imagine Garry or Bobby missing so many chances. And I don't mean to diss Magnus or Nepo, or Fabby from 2018. Reaching a WC match is an awesome accomplishment and these guys have had stellar careers. And I realize thanks to our silicon friends the style of play has changed, but still, it's disappointing! |

It shows that a large portion of armchair maestros here either have no conception of the reality of match play, or they are not used to playing opponents who have strong defensive capabilities. |
