May-09-23  areknames: Not a bad pun and such a fun game to play through. 2 queen promotions vs 1 knight promotion!

Breunor: 2 Queens vs a rook and 2 knights! Never saw that before!
May-09-23  Brenin: ... and a Q sac followed by a neat zugzwang to finish the game.
May-09-23  Scuvy: The game score appears to be incorrect as 24...Qc6+ is simply answered by 25 Nxc6. Perhaps 24....Qb7+ was played?

Gets my vote.

<Breunor: 2 Queens vs a rook and 2 knights! Never saw that before!>

Neither had I, ackshly.

No shortage of action in this tilt.

May-09-23  Carrubo: Top game!
May-09-23  Amarande: I expect the finish had to be calculated very precisely as well: not only must White not be allowed to get away with f8=Q (this would surely draw), but Q v. 2N is *also* a draw in the general non-trivial case, unless there's a rapid win like the zugzwang here.

A very interesting ending!

Yes. I'd go with that. 24...Qb7+ looks like the correct move.

I spun through the game. Stopped here.

Instead of 53.Qg3 White can pull down the curtain on this entertaining show with the Queen sac 53.Qg8+ Perhaps by then White was in time trouble.

piltdown man: Great game. But my Milan pun is better.

Sally Simpson: OOPS! Not Black, it should be

'Perhaps by then White was in time trouble.'

Did they have increments for this one. May1998. Increments were used in Karpov - Anand FIDE World Championship Match (1998) (Jan 1998)

Superb! I hadn't seen that. Very funny. The ♕-sac wins the entire white house: ♘, ♙ then the ♖ on e5. That is a pole-axe.

May-09-23  goodevans: I like the way that the house Stockfish now lets you step through its analysis with Olga (CG's Olga, not today's victor!). A welcome addition.

SF says that White would have had a winning advantage if he'd played the Rh8/Qc2 combo a move earlier but if you step through SF's analysis it's perfectly understandable why he chose 26.g4 instead.

I reckon he got as far as 26.Rh8 Kf8 27.Qc2 Qa6 28.Qh7 Rd2+ 29.Kh3 g4+

... and saw 30.fxg4?? Qf1+ 31.Kh4 Rh2+ 32.Kg5 Qf6#.

He would then have dismissed 30.Kxg4! as unplayable when apparently it's winning. To be honest, it didn't become clear to me for several more moves that that was the case, to the point where it's unlikely that SF is still finding the best moves.

That would have been an interesting game but maybe not as interesting as the game played.

Good pun. Great game.

offramp: <goodevans> Hmm. I have Masters in History from both Oxford and Cambridge and I have won various awards about Italian history, but I have never heard of the <Siege of Milan>.

fredthebear: It should be noted that the pun didn't come from the pun disaster. One can only imagine what treats we've been deprived of.

May-09-23  goodevans: Will we have another Milan-based pun tomorrow when its two big football teams face each other in the Champions League Semi-Final?

It's a huge reach, but you could call it even timelier. Unfortunately Slovaks call it differently, but in my language kolesar = cyclist. And the Giro has started a couple of days ago :-)

May-10-23  JohnBoy: Very entertaining game, full of delightful surprises. Nice pick
