Aug-26-24  King.Arthur.Brazil: 25 Nxh5 Kg8 (gx h5 Qh8#) 26. Nf6+ Kf8 27. Nd5 Kg8 28. Nxe7+ Nxe7 29. d5 Nxd5 30. Bxd5 exd5 31. Qxd5 Be6 32. Qxd8+ Rxd8 33. Rad1 Rxd1 34. Rxd1 a5.. Is this enough to win? I don't know.
Aug-26-24  Cecco: As <takebackok> indicates, if after 25. Nxh5 black plays 25. ... Re8 it is necessary to follow up with 26. Nf6 Re7 27. g4. And if 27. ... Ng7, this engine plays 28. Qg5 Bc6 29. h5. This is all very complicated, for a Monday.
Aug-26-24  daladno: Also went for Nxh5 and did not see immediate win. This one is Monday-easy only if Black wants to cooperate.
Aug-26-24  Lloyd Gross: A bit difficult for a Monday.

25. Nxh5 Kg8 26. g4 f6 27. Nxf6+ Kh8 28. Nh5+ Rg7 29. Nxg7 Nxg7 30. h5 gxh5 31. Re3 Rc8 32. Rh3 Qc7 33. Rxh5+ Kg8 34. Bxe6+ Bxe6 35. Qxe6+ Kf8 36. Rh8#

scormus: I didn't see a direct kill, but thought 25 Nd5 looked very convincing. I see B took the opportunity for a quick death.

MissScarlett: After <25.Nd5 Kg8>, white can play <26.Nxe7> with a material plus, but it's better to return with <26.Nf6+ Kf8> and then play a better move!
Aug-26-24  cocker: No need for Black to allow mate.

LIFE Master AJ: I guess Stockfish would give 25.Nd5 a question mark. (It liked 25.Nxh5 and 25.Ne4 much better than 25.Nd5.)

I also spent a ton of time looking for a forced mate ... or a quick knockout ... there was none.

25.Nd5 is the easiest and the simplest win. I would venture that 5-out-of-5 GM's would choose 25.Nd5, but it would be interesting to test this hypothesis.

Note that 25.NxB/d7+? IS a mistake, as after 25...RxB/d7; there is no mate as the BK now has the e7 flight square!

I also spent at least 10 minutes looking at 25.d4-d5!? I am not sure if it wins, but it sure is as interesting as heck. With the WN still crammed down Black's throat on the f6-square, Black isn't going to run away. The only question is: "Will it win by force?" (Does anyone care to post an analysis of 25.d5!? here?

LIFE Master AJ: Thumbs up for an interesting problem.
Aug-26-24  tonythekingfisher: I went for Nxh5 without too much thought, as it wins pretty clearly. I can't see why it isn't better than the game line, to be honest. Black can defend the game line with Kg8 or Ng7 at the cost of the exchange.
Aug-26-24  TheaN: I did go with <25.Nd5> with the idea of <25....Kg8> f5 26.Qxf6+ +- and else Qh8# <26.Nxe7+ +-> but also realized that this is a bit of the cheap way out: for Monday this is probably the way to go, either mate or win the exchange flat which in this position is crushing.

White's position seemed strong enough for something better, but the straightforward line would force resignation at any decent level. Spotted 25.Nxh5 but wasn't entirely convinced after 25....Re8 that giving Black time to get air for the king is smart: engines solve this rather easily sure, but in practice it's pretty tough to keep a king shelter locked up.

Aug-26-24  saturn2: 25.Nxh5 is a free pawn ....Kg8 and then I took 26.g4 The Nf5 cannot move so gxh5 is forced and 27.gxf5. White has only a pawn but the position seems won anyway.
Aug-26-24  mel gibson: (Does anyone care to post an analysis of 25.d5!? here?>

OK - it's still winning:

25. d5

(25. d5 Qb8 (1. ... Qb8 2.d6 Qxd6 3.Nxd7+ Kg8 4.Nf6+ Kf8 5.Qxd6 Nxd6 6.Rad1 Nf5 7.g3 Rc8 8.Ne4 Rec7 9.Bb3 Ke7 10.a4 Rb8 11.Kf1 Rb6 12.Rd2 Ng7 13.Rd4 Ne8 14.Rdd1 Rbc6 ) -3.85/46 311)

score for Black -3.85 depth 46.

Aug-26-24  TheaN: <mel gibson: (Does anyone care to post an analysis of 25.d5!? here?>

Actually do, because 25.d5 with 26.d6 was definitely another idea I looked at. Point being 25....exd5? 26.Nxd7+ +- is of course terrible due to 26....Q/Rxd7 27.Qh8# as now the rook on e1 starts contributing. Didn't really see a way to defend against it properly but it felt slow.

Aug-26-24  landshark: Big Think Monday for me -
After maybe 10 minutes I settled on the game continuation, unable to force mate in any lines I could see.
Aug-26-24  vajeer: I went with d5 which is winning too though computer score is lower than Nd5 or Nh5. Certainly more involved for a Monday.

After 26...Ke8, I don't see anything better than 27. Nxe7 Qxe7 (27...Nxe7 28. Bxe6 Bxe6 29. Rxe6) 28. Qxg6+ Qg7 29. Bxe6+ Bxe6 30. Rxe6) Nxe7 28. Bxe6+ Bxe6 29. Rxe6 Ra7 30. Rxa6, leaving white up an exchange and 3♙s.

TY for that! I felt - strongly - that a move like 25.d4-d5 HAD to be (at least) a candidate move!

I don't have a lot of time right now, but I promise to get my magnetic set out this afternoon and take a look at your analysis.

TY again. (aj)

PS I did NOT come up with it ...
but a number of years ago a strong kibitzer (here) came up with the observation that: "In a very strong position, you often have MANY ways to arrive at a win." (That might not be a direct quote, but it has turned out to be true hundreds of times!!)

Aug-26-24  Hercdon: Others have sorta mentioned this, but I would like to point out that the game move is worse than the move Stockfish comes up with. So dont despair if you did choose Nxe5, like I did. Its the best move
Aug-26-24  jffun1958: 25. Ne4 (threatening 26. Qh8#) Ng7 26. Nf6 Ne8 27. Nxh5 f6 28. Nxf6 Nxf6 29. Qxf6+ Rf7 30. Qh8+ Ke7 31. Qh6
