Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-13-22  geeker: Took a while to find this, since no sac or mate seems available. 27. R:c8+ wins the Black Queen, though.
Jun-13-22  Brenin: 27 Rxc8+ Qxc8 28 Qh8+ Ke7 29 Qxc8.
Jun-13-22  jes47: Simple problem after a blunder with 25...Rc8. There are a number of ways for black to retain equality, simplest might be 25...Rb4 and white has nothing, e.g. 26. Ra1 Qb5 27. Bh6 Bxh6 28. Qxh6+ Ke7 29. Qh4+ Kd7 30. Qf6 Re7 and black is solid.
Jun-13-22  mel gibson: Very easy.
Jun-13-22  agb2002: White is one knight down.

Black threatens Bg7.

White can recover the piece with 27.Qxh6+ or win the exchange with 27.Qh8+ but much better is 27.Rxc8+ Qxc8 28.Qh8+ Ke7 29.Qxc8 + - [Q vs n].

Jun-13-22  TheBish: A slightly harder puzzle would come a move earlier, as 26. Bh6! wins at least a piece.

Curious that a Sicilian Dragon would be called an Old Sicilian. It starts as an Accelerated Dragon, then transposes to a regular Dragon, Yugoslav variation.

Jun-13-22  saturn2: I took 27.Qh8 and different from MGP I think 27.Rxc8 is not much better.
Jun-13-22  nalinw: 27 Qh8 (which I also went for) wins only a Rook I think .....
Jun-13-22  stacase: 27.Rxc8+ Ouch! That took about three seconds to see.
Jun-13-22  saturn2: <nalinow> 27.Qh8+ Ke7 28.Rxc8 Qb7 29.Re8+ Kd7 30.Ba4 and R and Q on the 8th rank will cause further damage
Jun-13-22  AlicesKnight: Found Rxc8+ fairly quickly.
Jun-13-22  cocker: According to Fritz, surprisingly little difference between 27 Rxc8+ (+6.95) and 27 Qh8+ (+6.77).
Jun-13-22  TheaN: <27.Rxc8+ Qxc8 (else Rxb8) 28.Qh8+ Ke7 29.Qxc8 +-> is a simple take-out-the-defender tactic.

<agb, saturn2, nalinw, cocker: According to Fritz, surprisingly little difference between 27 Rxc8+ (+6.95) and 27 Qh8+ (+6.77).> It's about practicality. The computer concludes Black's helpless after 27.Qh8 Ke7 28.Rxc8, but for humans taking the queen out removes any doubt White has this in the bag. Unless you calculate all options after 28....Qb6+ I consider Rxc8+ superior.

Jun-13-22  King.Arthur.Brazil: Even if 25...f6 26. ♗h6 ♖e7 27. ♕h8+ ♔f7 28. ♕xg7+ ♔e8 29. ♕xf6 and Black game is over. Or 25...♗f6 26. ♗a4 ♖xb2 27. ♗xe8 (Now can't go with 27...♘xf3+ 28. ♖xf3 ♗xc3? 29. ♕xf7#. Therefore, 27...♕xe8 28.Tc7 and the check-mate is near. E.G.: 28...♕b8 29. ♗h6+ ♗g7 30. ♕h8# ou 29... ♔d8 30.♕g8#. The King (do you know me?) thinks that best was: 25...♖d8 26. ♗h6 ♗xh6 27. ♕xh6+ ♔e7 28. ♕h4+ ♔f8 29. ♕f6. Though, it seems that White attack still is strong, with threats ♔g2-♖h1-♖c7 (when possible) ♗a4-f4, since Black ♔ is unprotected.

  perfidious: Only since the advent of silicon would the diagrammed position have been considered un embarras de richesse; any competent practical player would plump for the line chosen by Ivanov to end matters.
