GrahamClayton: 4. a3?! is the creation of opening maverick Hugh Myers. By playing a passive move like 4. a3, White poses an immediate problem for Black - how to exploit this 'error'. If Black immediately tries to refute 4. a3, they can get into trouble. Maybe 4...a6 also playing passively and waiting for White to make their intentions clear is a simple response.

  Sally Simpson: <Hi Graham>

4. a3 does set a positional trap that players have fallen into. 4...Bc5 5.Nxe5.

Black could play 4...Nxe4 which I shall name as the 'The Walpurgis Gambit'

I googled 'what is the opposite of Halloween.' (4.Nxe5 is the Halloween Gambit.) it pointed me to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walpu...

Whether or not a pawn on a3 will have any critical effect I've no idea, I only know if I ever play against 4.a3 I'll play 4...Nxe4 and find out.

perfidious: <Geoff>, after 5.Nxe5, in effect one reaches a line oft seen with colours reversed; I had numerous games with it as Black, mostly in the 1980s. The tempo spent on 4.a3 appears to make little difference.

"I had numerous games with it as Black..."

We are not naming this after you unless you stick in two games where you won with it - under 25 moves.

No game here with 4...Nx5 yet. Opening Explorer

I played 4.Nxe5 against this lad Mark Condie in the early 80's back then it was called the Miller or Muller. I lost but nothing to do with the opening, it was me that lost it (and him being a better player.)

perfidious: <Geoff>, the one game for which I have a score is W Lukowiak vs A Shaw, 1985, and most of the rest were played in a three-way blitz match the following year vs a Colombian IM. He always played 5.Bxf7+ and did not fare well.

No, that will not do. You have to play 4...Nxe4 in this position in a rated OTB game.

The Walpurgis Gambit.

I do not have a Carlos Fandango Super-Duper computer so can someone with Stockfish Mk99 (or whatever the Mk is these days) see how it rates Black in this position.

perfidious: <Geoff>, it may be a while, as I have pushed the e-pawn only one square in all my activity this last year. Gotta prevent that Bc4, Qf3 and Qxf7# trick, don't you know!
